Why study Latin America? Few areas in the world can be as densely fascinating and complex as Latin America – a loose and perhaps even unsatisfactory designation that includes not only both Central and Southern America, but also a whole variety of indigenous cultures and traditions that to this day resist the appropriative gesture of the European Conquest. Whether you consider the art, the architecture, the sociology, the literature, the archaeology, the economics or the anthropology of the area, you are at once confronted by what is strange and perplexing, heroic and tragic, magical and real.

Who should apply for

Latin American studies? Latin American studies appeals to those who are planning to study literature, history, history of art, sociology or indeed any of the humanities or social sciences at university level, but who would like to give their studies an extra dimension of challenge and originality. As a student of Latin American studies, you will also

add to your portfolio the transferable skills of two languages – Spanish and Portuguese. Our courses also offer the chance for you to gain practical skills. You will have the opportunity to graduate with the experience of one of several internships (work placements) we offer, from journalism to delivering water systems to indigenous communities. Finally, in spending a period of time abroad, working and studying in Latin America, you will be able to present future employers with evidence of a capacity for self-reliance and independent endeavour.

Why study at Essex? From the very foundation of the University, Latin American studies has been central to the Essex ‘project’ – to its notion of itself as a modern university with a distinctive programme. Over the years, some of the most distinguished international scholars and writers associated with Latin America have either taught or been in residence at Essex, and the centrality of Essex to the study of Latin America is internationally recognised.

Of our current projects that have received enormous acclaim is the establishment of the University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art. In the years since its beginnings in 1993, the Collection has grown to become the most important collection of Latin American art to be found outside Latin America and it promises to be a centre of research and development for years to come.

Our library has one of the finest specialist collections of Latin American material in Europe, comprising over 85,000 books and pamphlets, 1,700 periodical titles (of which approximately 100 are current), as well as collections of Brazilian chap-books and Mexican codices in superb facsimile editions.

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities provides an information hub for everyone with an interest in Latin America. It brings together over 30 lecturers and researchers from ten schools and departments, and promotes cross-disciplinary exchanges, research seminars and symposia.
