Campus When you come to Essex you will have the ideal opportunity to get involved in sport, whether it’s something completely new to you or something you are already accomplished at. The Sports Federation runs 45 different sports clubs open to all levels of ability. The variety of the clubs here at Essex means there is a perfect excuse to try something new, like skydiving or lacrosse, or to perfect any existing skills you may have. Levels are varied and cost is minimal.

Around 40 acres of our Colchester Campus are devoted to sport. In addition to cricket, football, hockey and rugby pitches, we have tennis courts, a frisbee golf course and an artificial cricket wicket and nets. We also have a floodlit grass training area, a floodlit synthetic turf pitch which is used for training and matches, as well as jogging and orienteering routes around the campus. The sub-aqua and swimming clubs use the recently refurbished pool at Colchester Leisure World.

Our indoor facilities are also extensive, comprising a multi-purpose sports hall, five glass-backed squash courts, an indoor climbing wall and three activity

halls (ideal for aerobics, cheerleading, dance, martial arts and yoga). Evolve, our 130-station fitness room caters for the first-time user to the Olympic athlete. The cardiovascular equipment has iPod and USB connectivity with built-in TV screens. There are two areas of resistance equipment and a large free weights area. The air-conditioned activity halls and fitness room both offer full disability access and facilities.

In 2009-10, the University was ranked 39th in the national BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) league, climbing eleven places on the previous year. Our Ten-pin Bowling Club also won the BUCS championships. We have many notable successes within our competing sports teams on a weekly basis. However, if competition really isn’t your thing and you just want to get fit, then there are sports clubs available just so you can be active and socialise.

We are also home to the North Essex Squash Academy which provides a platform and pathway for the development of aspiring young squash players. Our Human Performance Unit sponsors a triathlon race team providing coaching support to elite-level students, the University’s Triathlon Club, and school-aged talented athletes.

We also run a number of coaching courses, enabling you to gain a number of coaching and officiating qualifications while studying at the University.

Undergraduate Prospectus 2012 | 31

Royston Sinclair, third-year BSc Sports and Exercise Science student, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

Royston was awarded a sports bursary for his talent and achievements in trampolining.

I have been awarded the bursary throughout all my years at Essex and this has really helped me to progress. I have benefitted from personal training, received financial support, and been able to work with a personal mentor to get the best out of my training, away from the trampoline.

Since starting at Essex, I have been able to establish myself on the trampoline circuit as a contender for national titles. This has been largely down to the scheme and this year I hope to improve on my second place finish at the British Championships by winning the title.
