After graduating, Carly completed her postgraduate studies at Essex and is now undertaking her PhD in the area of sports science.

I chose to study at the University of Essex because it was one of the country’s leading universities for sports and exercise science, and was widely recognised for the quality of its research. I also found that the University provided a large number of facilities for its students, both sporting and otherwise.

Carly Wood, BSc Sports and Exercise Science ’09, MSc Sports and Exercise Science ’10, Basildon, Essex

Settling into life at Essex was greatly helped by the provision of social events on offer at the Colchester Campus. A packed timetable of activities was offered to help new students meet each other and to help make the transition to university life easier.

Academically, there were several course inductions which helped me to feel at ease quickly and get to grips with the work I was required to do. I enjoyed all of the modules I studied within my course but found Exercise Physiology and Sports Psychology to be my favourite. They were incredibly interesting and relevant and included both lectures and practical study, allowing me and my fellow classmates to put theory into practice.

Whilst at the University, I frequently attended the gym and utilised the other sports facilities. However, if I could have my time again I would definitely get involved with more clubs and societies. I have some really great memories of my time at Essex, especially my graduation day which was brilliant. I would definitely recommend this course and Essex to everyone.

After graduating, Adam worked as a medical representative for a pharmaceutical company. He has recently returned to university to study medicine on a graduate entry programme.

I chose to study at the University of Essex because of its excellent reputation for sports and exercise science. The course

Adam Maguire, BSc Sports and Exercise Science ’04, Stow-Cum-Quy, Cambridgeshire

was ranked favourably among other sports science courses and I liked the campus atmosphere when I visited. The sports facilities were great, and when I applied new venues were about to be opened and others were being improved.

212 | Undergraduate Prospectus 2012

From day one I felt settled. I met a lot of like-minded people in the sports clubs and through my course. I met one of my best friends on the first night and we’re still good friends to this day. I was a member of the Football Club, of which I have many fond memories and through which I made many great friends. There was a great teamwork ethic and a strong social scene.

The course was interesting and challenging from day one – many of the lectures/modules we undertook were with the biological sciences undergraduates, so I felt confident that we were taking modules that were strong academically. I really enjoyed the Anatomy and Physiology module, as well as modules based on virology, genetics and immunology – these really stoked my interest in medicine and contributed to my decision to go on to study to become a doctor.

I feel that I made the most of my opportunities at Essex as my work and social life was pretty much jam-packed! However, if I had my time again I would probably join a few other clubs or societies – I’ve always fancied doing a martial art! My time at Essex was everything I’d want from a university. I gained a good degree from a respected institution, enjoyed the work that I did, made some great friends and had the time of my life!
