Rail Business Awards 2010 Preview Railway Benefit Fund

For the sixth year running, The Rail Business Awards’ chosen charity is The Railway Benefit Fund (RBF), the only UK charity dedicated solely to railway personnel in the UK and Ireland. The RBF was founded in the proud tradition of providing support to active and retired railway staff and their dependents in need through illness, injury, bereavement, or adversity. Now in its 152nd year, the charity is still as important to the industry of today as it was to those early railway workers in 1858. In these

Railnews

Railnews is sponsoring the Rail Business Awards’ Excellence in Internal Communications category for the sixth year running. As a news and information medium for the rail sector, Railnews recognises the need to encourage effective communication across the industry. With a readership of more than 200,000,

Railnews plays an important part in communicating what’s happening in the rail industry to a wide-ranging audience, from boardroom executives to trackside staff. Railnews was first published 48 years ago. After Sir Peter Parker – who placed great

emphasis on internal communications – became BR chairman in 1977, Railnews was issued to all rail industry employees, a policy that continued until privatisation. BR shut down the paper in October 1996, but a group of former rail managers re-launched it independently four months later. Since February 1997, more than 10 million copies have been printed and circulated. Understanding that readers want more than just the reporting of day-to-day news, Railnews works hard to document major developments taking place throughout the industry. In addition to its monthly print editions,

Railnews effectively went fortnightly in 2010, because it now also publishes a mid-month update in PDF format, Railnews Focus, which can be downloaded from www.railnews.co.uk, where up-to-the minute news and readers’ views are also read by a growing audience. Recognising the importance of sharing good news, Railnews continues to support the Rail Business Awards. ‘The awards, as well as being among the most popular in the industry, reflect how the railway really works, with categories ranging from IT and engineering to our speciality, internal communications,’ says editorial director Alan Marshall.

consultants, leasing companies and providers of specialist services. RIA provides a range of services to its members and represents the interests of the supply industry to government and key stakeholders. As well

as its own supply chain improvement and other initiatives, RIA takes part in many cross- industry activities and is pleased to support the Rail Business Awards to help encourage the continuing improvements in the sector.

is also a global provider of diesel engines for marine propulsion, oil well drilling rigs and stationary power generation. Electro Motive will provide the winner with a two-week training programme at the original equipment manufacturers’ facility in LaGrange, Illinois, with flights and accommodation also provided. The training will focus on the practical and technical aspects of the 710 engine, which is typically used in a Class 66 locomotive.

trying economic times when jobs, pensions and savings are all a good deal less secure, the RBF continues to provide a source of help. Indeed, the fund gets requests for financial assistance beyond its limited resources and there is a lot of real hardship out there caused by illness, loss of work, family breakdown and the effect of rising costs on older pensioners. Last year the RBF helped more than 600

people in need, providing grants in the region of £400,000 for a huge range of necessities, including mobility aids, specialist medical treatment, help with educational costs,

funeral costs and emergency payments in times of financial distress or domestic crisis.

Can you help?

The RBF relies on the support of people like you to help colleagues and their families in need and distress. You can ‘do your bit’ through payroll giving, regular donations or fundraising at staff events throughout the year. Even a small weekly donation can change lives.
