Rail Business Awards 2010 Preview

199 million in 2009, is set to hit 235 million in 2010 and NRE channels currently generate sales leads for the train operators worth nearly £0.5 billion per year. During the year 2009-10, services have

been expanded and enhanced through the use of the latest available technology, including a major upgrade of NRE’s ground- breaking Real Time Journey Planner (RTJP). The RTJP enables all the NRE channels to provide real-time reports of service disruptions as they occur and develop, in addition to timetable and fares information. National Rail Enquiries believes that the RTJP is the only deployed service of its kind in the world.

HOUGHTON INTERNATIONAL In the past year, Houghton International has designed and built a Motor Alternator (MA Set) load testing facility, which is the first of its kind in the UK rail industry. MA Sets are found underneath the carriage

on a large percentage of coaching stock, and are vital to the running and performance of the train as they generate the electricity and provide power for on-board facilities such as air conditioning. If large numbers of MA Sets were to become unavailable, this would cause a sizable problem for the train operator. Houghton International is currently testing the Mark 7 and Mark 7A MA Sets. Following the success of the 7 MA Set project, the company will shortly commence work on the Mark 12 MA Sets for which a new test rig is being designed.
