Integrated Transport Excellence of the year TFL LONDON RAIL


The £1bn East London Line Extension (Phase 1) opened fully, ahead of schedule, in May 2010. It provides access to key employment areas such as the City and Canary Wharf, and will support the 2012 Olympic Games.


The extension forms part of the London orbital rail network, reducing pressure on central termini, and is fully integrated with all other public transport modes. Its inclusion in the Oyster ticketing system, and in TfL’s customer information products, means interchange between the new London Overground line and other modes can be made seamlessly. By October, the line was already carrying a daily average of 70,000 customers.


SOUTHERN RAILWAY Southern’s growth strategy not only focuses on improving a passenger’s journey once they have reached the ticket office, station or train, but goes way beyond that to enhance the whole end-to- end journey experience.


It aims to make it easier than ever before to buy tickets, access its network and link with other modes of transport. Southern’s strategy sits within its company vision of ‘Making Every Journey Better’.


CUBIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AND TFL Cubic and Transport for London have worked together since 1998 to run the most successful integrated smartcard system in the world, covering rail, light rail, underground services, bus and river transport. From January 2010, London commuters have been able to use Oyster Pay as You Go on a wide range of rail services for the first time.


This represented the most significant advance in true integration for London’s travelling public and commuters since the introduction of Oyster, providing them with one integrated ticketing system for all modes of transport in London. The success was a win for millions of passengers, train operating companies, Transport for London and the city itself.
