restricting Southern’s machine ticket sales. After identifying purchasing trends and trends in passenger behaviour, Southern and Shere came together to design an entirely unique ticket machine which, thanks to its innovative features and design, has delivered record transaction times, increased TOD collections and enhanced the passenger experience. This new technology is the first of its kind in the sector and, after just a few months, is already proving to be an effective answer to the industry-wide issue of slow ticket machines and lengthening queues.

SOUTHERN RAILWAY (COMPETENCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM)
Southern’s operational safety department, with the support of its supplier ANT, has been able to introduce a competence management system (CMS) that consistently manages operational competency, while aiding the development of each candidate’s assessment. For the first time in the railway industry, the information on operational staff and their ability to carry out their roles as drivers, conductors and dispatchers is stored in one place and is available at the touch of a button. Competency developers, using laptop, PC or PDA can view information on any safety critical member of staff wherever they are. The new CMS is an effective design that incorporates the need for managing operational competence, with the practicalities of assessing staff who work remotely, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
BALFOUR BEATTY RAIL In 2008, Balfour Beatty Rail was awarded the contract by Network Rail to build 15 miles of double track main line as part of the Airdrie-to-Bathgate project, linking Edinburgh and Glasgow with an electrified main line.
By using an innovative 3D GPS- controlled guidance system for placing ballast and track tamping, Balfour Beatty Rail was able to increase track construction output significantly, while saving cost and improving construction accuracy. The system enabled the formation of the bottom ballast layer already including all crossfalls, cant and transition curve alignment. Significant shortening of the construction programme and material savings resulted from the use of this system.
