KEITH LUDEMAN, GO-AHEAD GROUP

Keith Ludeman has worked for the Go- Ahead Group for 15 years, starting in the bus division, before moving into the group’s rail division as chief executive of rail in 1998. He became Go-Ahead Group chief executive five years ago. In October, Ludeman announced his plans to retire in July 2011 after a 40-year career in the public transport industry. During his time at Go-Ahead, Ludeman has

James Adeshiyan Dave Knowles Steve Scrimshaw

played a key role in growing the rail business through a carefully targeted bid strategy, which has seen the rail franchise portfolio grow from one franchise in 2005 to three franchises today – Southern, Southeastern and London Midland. In 2006, the rail division’s revenue was £744m; in 2010, revenue was £1.5bn. With his unique leadership style, and the devolved approach to running its businesses that Go-Ahead adopts, Ludeman has enabled the three Tocs’ managing directors and leadership teams to flourish.

JAMES ADESHIYAN, FIRST HULL TRAINS First Hull Trains was formed in September 2000 and operates seven trains each week day between Hull and London. The company, based in Hull city centre, employs 100 staff and carries more than 720,000 passengers each year on its 90 services per week. In mid 2009, James Adeshiyan became

general manager and was tasked with turning around the company’s difficult period of reliability and punctuality issues. Through a number of feedback and information gathering methods, focusing jointly on customers and staff, a precise plan would be compiled to provide a clear strategy towards returning the company to its intended position.

DAVE KNOWLES, GB RAILFREIGHT

Dave Knowles, GB Railfreight’s head of production, leads a 30-strong team, making up a multi-skilled department that has myriad responsibilities ranging from train timings to resource planning. In the past 12 months, Knowles and his team have been responsible for increasing GBRf’s hauled services by 33 per cent year-on-year, reducing operating costs and improving returns, as well as supporting staff retention and growth in a contracting market.

Peter Maybury

Knowles has had a leading role in the introduction to the company of several new, high-profile traffic flows including London Underground Track Alliance (formerly Metronet), Rio Tinto Alcan coal and alumina services and, most recently, Drax Power biomass services. His career path has progressed rapidly since he joined GBRf, taking him into top management as a member of the company’s executive group within a period of just six years.

STEVE SCRIMSHAW, SIEMENS MOBILITY As managing director of rolling stock, a position to which he was appointed in May 2007, Steve Scrimshaw has overall responsibility for Siemens’ rolling stock sales and service in the UK. Over the last year, Scrimshaw has played a key leadership role in securing a contract win for Siemens to supply high speed trains to Eurostar for use through the Channel Tunnel. With an estimated value of £500-600m, this is a vital contract for Siemens, and it will allow its customer Eurostar to compete more effectively in the European rail market. Due to the importance of this tender to Siemens, Scrimshaw led the project personally. The level of political and legal complexity in this tender was high, and Scrimshaw was required to show leadership and vision to drive it to a successful conclusion.

PETER MAYBURY, FREIGHTLINER GROUP Peter Maybury has made a significant contribution to the transport industry. Starting his professional career as a management trainee at Ford UK in 1970, he became a senior manager specialising in traffic and logistics before he joined Railfreight Distribution in 1993. In 1996 Maybury joined Freightliner, taking over as head of its intermodal business eight years later. In 2009 he became CEO of Freightliner Group.

An electrical electronics engineer by training, Walton started with British Rail as an apprentice in 1966 and has worked in the areas of maintenance, locomotive and rolling stock design and project management as well as a variety of other posts.
