VTG Rail Freight Excellence of the year

MIDLAND ACS Midland ACS has developed a sophisticated pneumatic logic control system to automatically control the loading and discharging of biomass. The transportation of biomass material

for power generation used 23 existing wagons and outfitted them with roof doors to counteract the effect of biomass blow-off and spoilage by rain that would be associated with an open-top wagon. Midland-ACS developed a sophisticated pneumatic logic control system, to automatically control the loading and discharging of the biomass. With efficiency and health and safety in

mind – dust and moist biomass can ignite randomly within the pile – it was decided to build an enclosed loading and discharge station at both Port of Tyne and Drax. Both establishments would need to be automated with no personnel involved and, due to the combustible nature of the biomass, no electrical device would be permitted. The wagons would open their top doors for loading, with both the top and bottom doors opening for discharge at either site.

PORT OF FELIXSTOWE Rail has always played an integral role in the overall service offering of the Port of Felixstowe. To achieve service excellence, the port has undertaken and implemented a multi-faceted programme, including infrastructure, system and process investment.

The aim is to provide the customer with an efficient, cost-effective and viable rail transportation solution, delivering schedule integrity and high levels of booking compliance.

The port recognises the need to

demonstrate to shipping lines, forwarders, importers and agents that distribution by rail, as well as being a low-carbon green option, can be as reliable and flexible as the trucking alternative.

GB RAILFREIGHT

As well as renewing and expanding several existing contracts with long-standing customers, GB Railfreight has generated a significant volume of new business – something the freight operator has consistently done throughout its 11 years of existence. One new contract in particular, an agreement to deliver biomass regularly to one of Britain’s biggest power stations, puts GBRf at the forefront of environmental development within both the rail freight and the power generation industries. The deal

makes GBRf the first rail freight operator to deliver biomass regularly via the rail network. Now in its second decade, GBRf continues to prosper and, with Eurotunnel as its new owner, the next 10 years promise to be as successful and innovative, with European opportunities beckoning.

FREIGHTLINER Freightliner Group is the parent company of Freightliner (the container business), Freightliner Heavy Haul (the bulk rail

freight business) Freightliner Maintenance (a separate entity dedicated to the repair and maintenance of traction and rolling stock) a European subsidiary (Freightliner Poland) and Freightliner Australia Pty. Over the past year, despite the

unprecedented economic conditions and their effect on the rail freight market, Freightliner has continued to provide effective and reliable solutions to a wide range of customers, offering a viable alternative to road transport.
