Interfleet Technology

The upcoming awards event marks the 11th year of Interfleet’s association with the Rail Business Awards. Interfleet continues to sponsor the top prize of Rail Business of the Year, the ‘best of the best’ category awarded by the judges from the winners of all the other categories. Jonathan Wragg, Interfleet’s UK regional

director, says: ‘Our long standing commitment shows how we value business achievements within the UK rail industry. As a previous winner of the Rail Business of the Year, we saw the positive impact it had on our staff, and we are keen to see other companies benefit from winning this prestigious accolade.’ Interfleet continues to provide consultancy

services for rolling stock, infrastructure, railway systems and business management, encompassing heavy rail, light rail and metro systems. Its activities have continued to develop in the 12 months since the last awards, both in the UK and internationally.

For example, in the UK Interfleet has

recently secured a major contract to fit energy metering systems to fleets of EMU vehicles operated by London Midland, which will allow the operator to pay for each train’s actual energy consumption, while monitoring individual train usage at any point on the rail network. Interfleet is responsible for both the turnkey fitment of the energy metering equipment (supplied by FAR Systems) and for the processing, reporting and analysis of the energy usage data using Interfleet’s bespoke energy management solution, Energyx, made available to users via Interfleet’s clyx.net extranet. This project reflects Interfleet’s growing portfolio of services in the sustainability and environmental arena. Developments in Interfleet’s Infrastructure team have seen the company undertake a series of strategic infrastructure audits aimed at improving asset reliability and operating costs, both in the UK and overseas, including

Institution of Railway Operators

The Institution of Railway Operators (IRO) was launched in May 2000 to develop and promote the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the railways: heavy rail, metro, light rail and heritage rail operations; and ensure the institution acts as the custodian of best practice in railway operational management.

It is able to offer its members distance- learning courses at Glasgow Caledonian

University, leading to certificate, diploma and degree-level BSc qualifications. To date, 155 students (all holding day jobs in the rail industry) have graduated and 158 are currently enrolled and working their way through the courses. The institution is proud of the fact that 36

major rail operating companies have joined as corporate members, including Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail), CRC Australia, Northern

Ireland Railways, London Underground and Transnet Freight Rail in South Africa. For further information, please visit www. railwayoperators.org. Chris Daughton, chief executive, IRO,

says: ‘We are delighted to be the sponsors of the Young Professional of the Year award for the second time, and are again impressed with the calibre of entries for this prestigious award.’

and personal development, with a key challenge being the promotion of professional development. An educated, informed and highly trained workforce is essential if we are to tackle the daunting transport and logistics problems that face our world today. With a focus on the development of professional excellence and the promotion of best practice and leading-edge thinking in logistics and transport, the institute aims to encourage the promotion of policies that are efficient, sustainable and responsive to the challenges of a changing world. CILT provides a comprehensive qualifications

programme to enhance the knowledge, competence and respect of individuals working

Germany, Ireland and Australia. The most recent addition to the team is Phil Ransom, who is also the current president of the Permanent Way Institution. In June 2010, Interfleet acquired a 30-strong

German rail company Die Ingenieurwerkstatt, a leading European consultancy for safety engineering, maintenance optimisation, railway asset management and rail franchising. The acquisition brings new and complementary skills and experience and increases Interfleet’s operations and service offering across central Europe. Wragg concludes: ‘We are continuing to build the Interfleet brand and our offering on an international level. As we now enter our 11th year of sponsorship, we can look back and see how we have grown alongside the Rail Business Awards. We are very pleased to continue our support of the Rail Business of the Year category and to celebrate our clients’ business successes with them.’
