Rolling Stock Excellence of the year

SOUTHERN RAILWAY Southern’s priority seat scheme is a unique approach to raise awareness of priority seating – Southern is the first train company to offer a Priority Seat Card to passengers. Southern has also been the first to give more prominence to onboard priority seating and introduce signage that meets EU regulations. The initiative was developed through

stakeholder liaison and working with passengers to find what would be useful to them, tailoring the project to their needs. The innovative design for both the card and the onboard signage includes a recognisable mark used throughout.

FIRST GREAT WESTERN (TELEVISION SCREENS ON HSTS) First Great Western has teamed up with VoloTV to introduce on-demand touchscreen television screens to the backs of seats in a specially adapted entertainment carriage onboard its High Speed Trains. The televisions are a world first in on-train entertainment and have radically changed

the customer experience on long-distance journeys.

FIRST GREAT WESTERN (ROLLING STOCK INVESTMENT) Over the last year, First Great Western has invested millions of pounds in rolling stock – in new trains, in on-train service, in refurbishment and maintenance regimes and in technology. It has also increased the number of train services it runs. Better maintenance at engineering depots across the First Great Western network has delivered significantly improved reliability. It has grown passenger numbers and improved customer satisfaction levels.

SIEMENS MOBILITY

Siemens designed the Class 380 with many innovations, including energy efficiency, improved HVAC systems, on-train remote diagnostics, improved driver crash protection and a new crash repair strategy. The new 380 delivers benefits to businesses and passengers, which include reduced vehicle track access charge, improved

maintenance, better energy efficiency, reduced train construction costs, improved passenger safety and environment.

NATIONAL EXPRESS EAST ANGLIA The National Express East Anglia team has developed and implemented a Remote Train Monitoring (RTM) system for its Class 90 locomotives and Driving Van Trailers (DVTs), which has significantly improved the performance, reliability and customer environment of its intercity trains. The system, which provides comprehensive

real-time data, transmission and analysis system to the fleet and operations team, is the first of its type in the UK rail industry to be retrofitted to a complete fleet of existing trains. Miles per casualty (MPC) rates have increased by almost 60 per cent, while delay minutes attributable to these trains have reduced by 40 per cent since the RTM equipment was installed. The initiative has also delivered wider benefits in areas such as fleet safety, driver performance, timetabling data, infrastructure and energy analysis.
