Integrated Transport Excellence of the year
play an important role in attracting more passengers onboard Translink services. In autumn 2009, it launched iLink
– Northern Ireland’s first commercial integrated bus and rail smartcard – representing a major step forward in delivering integrated travel for customers throughout Northern Ireland.
STOBART GROUP AND ATKINS In August 2010 the construction of Southend Airport Station was completed. Its innovative design will herald a new era of true transport integration in the region, marrying both business and environmental benefits with a strong emphasis on delivering a unique passenger experience.
The development was commissioned by Southend Airport owners Stobart Group. It consists of a new station constructed adjacent to the airport on the National Express East Anglia Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street line. Stobart Rail will take tenancy and operate the station, which will increase accessibility and provide train services to Stratford’s Olympic site in 44 minutes, and to London Liverpool Street Station in 53 minutes.
EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS Launched by Stagecoach Group in April 2009,
megabusplus.com is the UK’s first and only integrated budget coach and rail service. The budget service provides a fast, integrated journey between Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and London with tickets on offer for as little as £1. Passengers using
megabusplus.com can travel by comfortable coach and high- quality train between London’s modern St Pancras Station and nine key locations in the north of England – Hull, Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Castleford, Harrogate, York, Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield. Passengers travel on a dedicated coach to East Midlands Parkway station, where they then board a fast, direct East Midlands Trains service to take them to London St Pancras, helping to bypass any of the traffic problems that can often be experienced when travelling into the capital city.
ABELLIO
The opening of Leeds CyclePoint in September represented a step change in facilities offered at Leeds station, and indeed any UK station. A truly integrated bike/rail service has been
created, providing secure parking in a brand new facility dedicated to cyclists’ requirements and manned by specialist staff. CyclePoint provides information on cycling in the city, plus cycle rental and repair services. A range of cycling accessories and bikes are also on sale in the building, facilitating a full door-to- door journey. The concept can be easily replicated, and the roll-out of further CyclePoints is being explored.
FIRST CAPITAL CONNECT The Line2line bus link between St Albans and Hatfield was introduced in October 2009. Linking First Capital Connect’s Thameslink and Great Northern routes, it has generated many new journeys across the network.
The link is based on the use of high frequency bus services between St Albans and Hatfield stations.
Many journeys that would otherwise require rail travel into and then out of London are easier and cheaper, encouraging people to travel by train rather than by private car. Customers also avoid using potentially crowded services to and from London.
