an excellent example of how a variety of diverse organisations can come together to make a significant impact on the individual passenger experience.
ATKINS
Safety of staff in an active rail environment is essential. Atkins is aware, however, that safety is by no means restricted to specific persons, in specific roles – safety is critical in all walks of life. Consequently, the business invested in the development of a behavioural safety programme, applicable to all staff, which would effectively prompt a cultural shift in terms of staff safety. At its core, the safety message was a simple one; human behaviours and actions, will, by consequence, affect those around them. The key for Atkins is to ensure that their employees are ‘Safe by Choice’.
HEATHROW EXPRESS Heathrow Express, the fastest transport between Heathrow Airport and central London, is committed to safety and security excellence. The escalator accident project implemented in October 2009 demonstrates this commitment. This project, which involved implementing a number of station environment and engineering improvements, has been successful in significantly reducing a pertinent risk to passenger safety within the airport terminal environment. The results of this scheme signify an important enhancement to safety and security

excellence that can be applied throughout the industry.
EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS Improving safety culture through staff engagement and empowerment is an example of safety excellence thanks to the significantly positive change it has made to the safety culture at Nottingham, one of East Midlands Trains’ largest train crew depots.
Over a period of two years, East Midlands
Trains had adopted a structured process of engaging with drivers in an open and proactive manner, in order to fully understand and improve issues that have direct and indirect links to the delivery of a robust safety culture. The output of this process has helped deliver an award-winning Cat ‘A’ Spad performance, along with external recognition from within and outside the rail industry.
FIRST CAPITAL CONNECT A spate of attempted and successful break-ins at First Capital Connect (FCC) ticket vending machines brought into sharp focus the need for direct action to reduce this activity and bring the culprits to justice. FCC, Shere and the BTP worked together to find solutions to the problem with startling results. The resulting Operation Tapestry and technical modifications carried out to the ticket machines reduced thefts and damage from nearly £300,000 to virtually zero – an amazing outcome by anyone’s standards.
Heathrow Express SIEMENS MOBILITY
Siemens continuously works to improve safety management to provide a safer environment for its employees and contractors. To gain the most from any initiative, it
is vitally important to involve staff in the process. Encouraging everyone to report unsafe acts or conditions has enabled the successful implementation of its Take Care initiative. The introduction of a Behaviour Based Safety approach enabled Siemens to achieve a 40 per cent year-on-year reduction in +3 day accidents. Overall, Siemens is working to help improve and change the perception of safety assurance both within the rail sector and in the wider context.
BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE Excellent work is being done by British Transport Police’s (BTP) London Underground and DLR Area Graffiti Team to detect and deter acts of graffiti vandalism on the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway. Using a partnership approach, working
with the industry, other BTP areas and the Metropolitan Police Service, the small Graffiti Team on London Underground Area has, during the past 12 months, succeeded in detecting more than 50 per cent of graffiti crime committed, and reduced graffiti crime by more than 16 per cent. These excellent results have been achieved by concentrating on organised groups of vandals responsible for causing damage in excess of £1m to the rail network.
