LPA EXCIL ELECTRONICS LPA Excil Electronics developed LumiPanel, which replaces not only the fluorescent tube but the entire luminaire and power supply in a panel only 20mm thick – available in any standard width above 200mm and in any length from 600mm in 300mm modules.
Lumipanel weighs about 2kg less than a comparable fluorescent luminaire, delivering 10 per cent more light output using up to 45 per cent less energy than a comparable fluorescent luminaire. Lumipanel is ideal for new build, where interior design can optimise the application by replacing the traditional two side rows of luminaires with a single central LumiPanel running the length of the car, affording additional weight and energy saving.
TRANSLINK
Public transport, by its very nature, is a sustainable option – and Translink works hard to offer integrated travel solutions that are attractive, sustainable and good value in order to attract passengers and in particular reduce the use of the private car. However, as well as encouraging more
passengers onboard, reducing car usage and congestion, Translink also takes steps to reduce its own impact on the environment. A range of measures has been implemented in order to continue to improve sustainability and environmental management within its own business and in the wider community.
TUBE LINES In 2010, Tube Lines set itself the target of recycling more than 90 per cent of its waste in order to meet separate carbon reduction targets, to reduce waste disposal costs and, for ethical reasons, to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. This target built on previous successes
and far exceeds industry norms; indeed, it is even better than most examples of best practice. Despite setting such tough targets, the company is consistently beating them, with recycling levels currently at 94 per cent.

move biomass – an imported organic, environmentally friendly and energy efficient fuel, from Port of Tyne in Northumberland to Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire – GBRf becomes the first freight operator to transport the sustainable energy source regularly for power generation on the rail network. Furthermore, it was a deal introducing a new market to the industry, one that will see it move a substantial amount of freight traffic off road and onto rail.
NATIONAL EXPRESS EAST ANGLIA National Express East Anglia (NEEA) has delivered a comprehensive and all- embracing approach to the issue of energy efficiency and environmental issues, which has achieved real improvements in environmental performance. Highlights include a further
four per cent company-wide decrease in energy use – despite a cold winter, and on top of a previous nine per cent reduction in fleet energy usage – keeping it on course for an eventual 20 per cent reduction.
It has built on its existing, successful and award-winning strategy, with further actions and innovations taking in eco- driving, traction energy reduction, recycling and an innovative carbon-neutral station scheme on the Bittern line between Norwich and Sheringham.
As well as specific innovative work-
streams within the plans, the approach has been about embedding the positive strategy across the company, rather than just achieving one or two important, but isolated schemes. This responsible and sustained strategy places NEEA at the vanguard of environmental strategy in the UK rail industry.
