SOUTH QUAY – TFL LONDON RAIL The £30m state-of-the-art station opened at South Quay in October 2009 – the day after the old station was closed – allowing three- car trains to be brought into use on the Bank to Lewisham route of the DLR. The new station makes a positive contribution to the Docklands community with its contemporary design, updated facilities and environmentally friendly features. London Rail engaged with the community and local stakeholders and the station was designed to support Tower Hamlets' Millennium Quarter master plan. A significant increase in usage has been recorded since the new station opened.


STREATHAM HILL – SOUTHERN RAILWAY For years, Streatham Hill station was in need of a total transformation from a fairly


rundown, unwelcoming and inaccessible environment to one that was clean, bright, welcoming and accessible. After 18 months of continuous improvement work, that transformation has now been realised. The station is now fully accessible with step-free access to all areas of the station, achievable by the installation of lifts to both platforms. The station has also benefited from substantial improvements to the booking hall and platform building. Passengers can now enjoy the experience of using the station and staff can work in a much more comfortable environment.


EASTBOURNE – SOUTHERN RAILWAY


Southern is the proud manager of Eastbourne station, a vibrant station providing fast services to London, Brighton and services along the East


Coastway to Ashford International. As well as a frequent service, Eastbourne offers passengers, and the local town, fabulous passenger facilities. From a warm, comfortable passenger lounge to an NHS Medical Centre there are a range of local services – you can even get your hair cut by the station barber.


UCKFIELD – SOUTHERN RAILWAY AND OPTIMUM CONSULTANCY The new station at Uckfield offers improved waiting facilities and platform shelters, greater accessibility for all and an improved CCTV network for the 335,000 passengers travelling through the station each year. For the train operator, the high-quality station facilities were delivered on time and within budget, through collaborative working between all stakeholders. Maintenance costs have been reduced, saving 75 per cent on annual asset management costs, and working conditions for staff have been improved. The station also offers new covered cycle


racks with CCTV and a landscaped station entrance with a taxi rank.


Streatham Hill South Quay


MIDDLESBROUGH – FIRST TRANSPENNINE EXPRESS Middlesbrough station is a historic Grade II-listed building, built in 1877. Managed by First TransPennine Express since February 2004, it had benefited from a number of significant changes in and around the station. Structural, environmental and cultural improvements have made the station more welcoming, accessible and user- friendly for its 1.4 million annual customers. Major works this year, including refurbishment of the buffet, the installation of lifts, attention to detail and numerous aesthetic improvements, have further polished the station. The dedication and commitment of the station team have created a historic station that offers modern-day standards of service.


Eastbourne Middlesbrough


BARNSTAPLE – DEVON COUNTY COUNCIL


Barnstaple Station, the terminus of the Tarka Line from Exeter, has been transformed into a modern, effective station with attractive heritage features. The project was completed in 2009-10 by a very positive and comprehensive partnership of the rail industry, local authorities, local business and volunteers. The project has achieved a major
