“I’m very experienced at business meetings, but sometimes I’m left wondering when is a good time to discuss pricing and ask for the order.”

AT 7AM my eight-year-old son Ian usually wakes me up before his mum drives him to school. I touch his rosy cheeks and tell how much I love him, my perfect wake-up call! After a shower my morning ritual is finished off by a

drive-through McDonalds for a steaming hot coffee and a bagel. I look up at the sky and the sunshine warms me, while the scent of coffee cheers me up. It’s going to be a good day. At around 8.30am I arrive in the office and I know I will be met with many emails from my colleagues in the West. With my clumsy English I can barely understand what they want and how I can help. After around 30 minutes of reading emails I once again jump into my mini- van and head to the other side of the city for meetings. Today’s most important meeting was with a set-top box

producer who is eager to buy our webcams to be bundled with their systems. I’m very experienced at these types of meetings, but sometimes I’m left wondering when is a good time to discuss pricing and ask for the order. Happily, I didn’t have to wonder for too long because he finished the conversation with: “Jack, the order is yours.” Out of the blue, I see a familiar face outside the meeting

room’s glass wall. It’s my classmate Ruben from my MBA programme. We are happy to see each other, so I suggest having lunch together after my meeting. Over lunch, Ruben tells me that he has been offered a job to represent his company in his home town in Peru. I am so happy for him. Nothing is better than home, especially at Christmas. I head back to the office to pick up where I left off and

get updates from my assistant, one of which is that we have received a PO for an order we have been working on for a few months. I knew it was going to be a good day!
