ACER LOOKS TO CHINESE TABLET MARKET


TECHNOLOGY CAN REDUCE COUNCIL BUDGETS Technology can drastically cut costs for local authorities and businesses of all sizes, potentially supporting the economy’s recovery, a study by managed services provider Redstor has discovered. Among the findings of the research were an overall efficiency gain of 20 per cent, the avoidance of over 2,500 hours of maintenance downtime and in the case of Bradford’s education authority, over £55,000 per annum was saved.


KINDLE DRIVES E-READER SALES The e-reader market is forecast to grow in 2011, with sales expected to surpass 11 million units, research firm Gartner has said. This compares to the estimated 6.6 million units sold in 2010, with growth being driven by the Kindle. “The connected e-reader market has grown dramatically during the past two years, driven by sales of Amazon's e-readers, primarily in North America,” said Gartner’s principal research analyst, Hugues De La Vergne. However, the analyst warned of increased competition from media tablets like the iPad, which overlap with e-readers in some of their functionality.


FOXCONN BOOSTS TAIWANESE LAPTOP MARKET Foxconn’s recent strong global performance has helped the Taiwanese laptop market as a whole back in to growth. Total shipments for the country’s top five laptop manufacturers reportedly experienced a decline of 1.7 per cent. But when Foxconn, the sixth largest manufacturer in Taiwan, was factored into the equation,


Acer is aiming to take between 15 and 20 per cent of the global tablet PC market, and is looking to China to provide more than a fifth of its total sales within five years. The tablet market is expected to see global shipments of 40 to 50 million units this year, with shipments expected to grow by 57.4 per cent per year on average between now and 2014. “Tablet is a huge market and it shows a new path for new growth,” said Acer’s chairman JT Wang.


IT WORKERS SEARCH FOR NEW JOBS


Around 80 per cent of IT employees are planning to look for new work this year, while 85 per cent intend to look for new work once the recession ends, a survey by recruitment firm the IT Job Board has found that. In terms of reasons for a planned move, 53 per cent said they didn’t feel valued, and 48 per cent cited a poor salary. Apparently better communications would convince many to stay, with 53 per cent saying that their lack of loyalty was due to management not listening, while 46 per cent said it was down to employers cutting corners.


EU BROADBAND COVERAGE DOUBLES


The number of homes in Europe with broadband connections has doubled since 2006, now representing 61 per cent of households. According to figures released by Eurostat, 84 per cent of homes with children now have internet access, compared to just 65 per cent of those without children. The study took in 27 EU member states and found that Sweden had the highest broadband penetration at 83 per cent, while Greece had the lowest with 41 per cent.
