SOFTWARE  GAMES 2011
Portal 2 Release Date: April 18
PORTAL achieved huge critical acclaim for its creativity back in 2007, and expectations are high for the sequel. The original was essentially a bolt on to Half Life 2, but developers Valve are committed to producing a fuller boxed product for 2011. The title essentially plays with the idea of physics, with players having to solve lateral puzzles to work their way out of rooms and traps, usually involving logic-defying portals which increase in complexity. It could hardly be called a FPS series, featuring as it does barely any violence, but instead is credited with existing almost in its own new genre. The thinking mans PC game for 2011.
Shogun 2: Total War Release Date: March 15
CREATIVE ASSEMBLY are the masters of historical real time strategy, and have been making titles in the Total Warseries for over a decade. Having gone through the Roman, Medieval, and Napoleonic ages, the series now returns to its roots in feudal Japan for its sixth instalment. Players take on the role of a clan leader, and use warfare, economics and diplomacy to try and reunite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun. With a series of graphical updates, the battles have never looked better, while incremental improvements in AI will keep veterans entertained.
Crysis 2 Release Date: March 22
CRYSIS IS still the bellwether for how well a PC can handle high spec games. However, the gorgeous shooter was also acclaimed for its gameplay as well as it looks, and Crytec’s sequel looks to be equally spectacular. Players again take on the role of a super-soldier in a nanosuit, allowing amazing feats of strength, speed and agility. Aliens have attacked New York this time round, and the swathes of impressive, destructible architecture provide almost as much spectacle as the invading aliens themselves. This is one of the most anticipated games of the last few years, and is destined to make waves.
F.E.A.R. 3 Release Date: April 2011
AS THE NAME suggests, the F.E.A.R series is a shooter that does its best to scare you. The game follows around an elite squad of soldiers who are dispatched to areas of paranormal activity, and proceed to shoot the place up. Players take on the role of either Point Man – a genetically enhanced soldier with superhuman reflexes and the ability to manipulate time, or the undead spirit of his brother Paxton Fettel – essentially a ghost with potent psychic powers. The story is typically eerie and atmospheric and is certainly one of the more intense titles of the year.
