REHABILITATION tion of pain and movement dysfunctions.
Through the use of sports Pilates and the application of the sports Pilates model, there are a number of factors that can be achieved: ■ Progressive development of movement patterns
■ Development of good sequencing of movement patterns
■ A tool of variable stability training which can be individually tailored and developed to suit ability and sport- specific needs
■ A method of skill challenge ■ Acts as a challenge to feedback systems (static balance/muscle stren- gth/flexibility)
■ Enables key stability areas to be trained in isolation or interconnected to ensure efficient use throughout the sport
■ Through the progression of exercises, reduced faulty movement patterns are developed thereby limiting movement dysfunction and the presence of injuries
■ Training muscles to work (antagonist - agonist in action) allows for co-ordi- nated, smooth movements, which reduce the incidence of injury in sport
■ Sports Pilates exercises form a means of active recovery for the repetitive demands of the athlete’s sport, allow- ing work to be undertaken in different planes and muscle patterns in the interests of injury prevention.
