GARMENT DECORATION AWARDS
Judge: Dave Roper of D. Roper Ltd
Categories: Best Screen Print on a Dark Garment; Best Screen Print on a Light Garment; Best Special Effect Screen Print
The Best Screenprint on a dark garment attracted a large number of entries, but according to judge, Dave Roper, many entries fell at the first hurdle because of a few basic mistakes. "On the whole, the standard was very high. But some of the most basic things were overlooked," said Dave. Here's Dave's checklist: – The design must be in the middle. – The design must be in registration. – Check for flaws - for example, small bits of cotton in the design. Adds Dave: "With basic mistakes like these, you wouldn't submit the garment to a customer, let alone a competition. "Around 80 per cent of the entries were eliminated because of very basic mistakes. "There were entries where the the squeegees have run down the side and crushed the fabric. "These are things that are really easy to get right." "The feel of the garment is also important," continues Dave. "It's simple little things. But spend the time to make sure it's absolutely perfect. Even if you're an absolutely brilliant printer, you still need to check."
BEST SCREEN PRINT ON A DARK GARMENT
Winner: Logomotif Garment Printing & Embroidery, Jason Gould, for A.I.L.D.
Judge's comments:
It's a very large flash cured print - and because it is such a large area, that's difficult to do. The registration is nice. The tones are very subtle. The design is in proportion to the garment. It isn't off to one side. It covers the garment. I would have liked to have seen an original, to see how close it is to the original. The more you look at it, the more you think what a nice print it is.
Runner up: Evolve Branding Ltd, Gareth Street, for Oakham Ales

Runner up, Harvey Jeal, of Evolve Branding Ltd, with the Oakham Ales T shirt.
Judge's comments:
It's printed on all four positions for once. It's printed on two sleeves, which are nice and bright and white, which is quite difficult to do. It's printed front and back. It hasn't been crushed. There are no tramlines down the outside, which is nice. It does what it says. It advertises the ale straight away. It pulls you in. It's nice and bright. It's in the middle. I know this sounds silly, but it's very hard to line up something on a square shape. Someone has taken some time to think about it. Why a runner up? Perhaps the yellow could have been a bit brighter and punchier.
Runner up: Certnfase Limited, Nicola Megeney, for Threshold - Wounded Land
Judge's comments:
The registration is very good. It's got a very soft feel. The print is almost three dimensional. You don't get tired of looking at that one.
