WORLD DISCOVERY YEARS 1991 – 1999
T
aking advantage of lower post-deregulation airfares, Tauck’s customers were
traveling overseas in ever-greater numbers during the 1980s. And until Tauck
developed overseas itineraries, these loyal guests and other potential customers,
had no choice but to travel independently or with competitive tour operators.
Prior to international expansion, there were many concerns as to whether Tauck
would be able to provide the same life-enriching travel experiences overseas.
Could Tauck replicate the personal service, quality of accommodations, dining,
and transportation with unknown foreign suppliers, language and cultural
barriers? Had it not been for Arthur’s successful experience in launching Hawaii
in the 1960s, when many of the same concerns had been raised, Tauck may have
remained in North America.
With the third generation of Taucks running the day-to-day business, Arthur Jr.
pulled out his passport and hit the road with the “Dream Team,” Scott Supernaw
and Herbert Wiese. Thus began Tauck’s international expansion that would catapult
the company into a global travel leader.
From 1991 through 2001, Tauck’s product offerings grew to cover all seven continents
and to include a wide offering of small ship cruises. Tauck was transformed from
a company led by a single entrepreneur to a company led by a management team
with the third generation of Taucks at the helm. As this period came to a close,
Tauck Tours changed its name to Tauck World Discovery to better reflect the nature
and scope of its travel offerings.
