A Room With a View
The towering rugged mountains, pristine forests and
majestic glaciers of the Canadian Rockies caught Arthur Jr.’s
imagination in the late 1950s. It is unusual for such a
remote wilderness to have world-class accommodations.
Thanks to the Canadian Pacific Railroad, the Canadian
Rockies were an exception. However, there was one
major problem; no rooms were available. Built to attract
customers for the railroad, virtually every hotel room in
the Canadian Rockies was linked to a train car berth.
Arthur first applied for hotel rooms in 1958 and
was turned down. He applied again in 1959, 1960 and
1961, all with the same result. Finally, in 1962, a motel
outside of Banff, the Timberline Lodge, gave the green
light. Arthur snapped up the offer and proceeded to
fill every room allocated. Impressed, Canadian Pacific
Hotels finally gave Tauck the space it wanted at the
Banff Springs Hotel in 1964.
Today, Tauck is the most important leisure partner
of Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise and the
Jasper Park Lodge; all now owned by Fairmont Hotels.
