BREAKTHROUGH YEARS 1958 – 1990
W
hen Arthur Tauck Jr. took over as President of Tauck Tours in 1958, the
company was still a relatively small motor coach tour company specializing
in the eastern regions of North America. Under Arthur’s leadership, Tauck would
grow into a global travel company.
During this period, Tauck aggressively expanded beyond motor coaches to many
modes of travel. Arthur pioneered air travel with the first chartered aircraft for
leisure travelers and air/land tours that opened up the American West to East
Coast travelers. He literally invented heli-hiking with his friend, Hans Gmoser; it
opened up the breathtaking vistas of the Canadian Rockies that were previously
enjoyed only by mountain climbers.
Under Arthur, Chuck Tauck and Phil Otterson developed scenic and exciting
journeys throughout North America incorporating private rail, float planes and
an unmatched collection of small ship cruises. In some regions, such as Hawaii
and New England, multiple journeys were created to meet demand. The common
thread that ran through all of these unique travel experiences was the imagination
and creativity involved in providing access to the lesser-known, hidden gems of our
world. Additionally, Arthur and his team never lost sight of “a fair and affordable
price” — a Tauck hallmark since the inception of the company.
