First Tauck Tour
With his new coin tray invention in hand, Arthur Tauck Sr.
grew to love the salesman’s life on the road and he spent much
of 1924 driving throughout the Northeast selling his coin
trays to banks. In the course of one business trip to North
Adams, Massachusetts, he spent the morning enjoying the
incredible fall foliage of the Berkshire Mountains. During
lunch that day at the Wigwam Restaurant on the Mohawk
Trail, he noticed that his fellow diners were all businessmen
like himself. The incredible natural beauty he was enjoying was
simply unknown and out of reach for the casual vacationer.
It occurred to Arthur that he could bring tourists to these
places himself. He proceeded to sketch out his first itinerary
– the eleven-hundred-mile New England Fall Foliage Tour –
that would cover the Mohawk Trail, Berkshire Mountains,
Adirondack Mountains and Catskill Mountains. More
significantly, he developed the concept of creating “the ideal
vacation” by taking care of not just the transportation but
rather every single facet of a carefully planned trip… all for a
single price. It was a revolutionary idea.
At that time, Arthur had no intention of foregoing his coin
tray business; he would take his touring clients along on his
sales trips! Realizing that his own vehicle was too small to
accommodate tourists, coin trays and luggage, he rented a
1924 seven-passenger Studebaker touring car. The first tour
began on July 12, 1925 with six passengers.
What had begun with the dismissal of this young man from
a bank in New Jersey had led directly to the start of a company

and the birth of a new industry.
