European River Cruising
Tauck’s first European River Cruise was in 1992, almost ten years
before riverboats became one of the hottest categories in the travel
business. That first cruise meandered along the Danube, Main and
Rhine rivers, all the way from Vienna to Köln. It was really ahead
of its time and helped Tauck understand how to perfect the most
enriching and indulgent cruises in Europe.
One key to a better river cruise experience, of course, is the boat.
It’s an interesting fact that virtually all riverboats on the major rivers
of Europe are the same length, width and height – dimensions
dictated by the locks connecting the rivers and by clearance under
the historic bridges. So, it’s really important what you do with that
space. And it helps when you custom design your own riverboats
based on direct feedback from customers, as does Tauck. For
example, most riverboat companies have many small cabins,
packing on as many passengers per cruise as possible. Tauck’s boats
are limited to no more than 118 guests, compared to an average of
about 140 guests on other boats. This enables Tauck’s fleet to offer
more and larger suites and to have the only European riverboats with
two restaurants offering the option of lighter fare “bistro” dining.
The second and perhaps most important key to a better river
experience is the land experience! Since Tauck started in Europe as
a land operator, the consistency and quality of the shore excursions
are unparalleled.
When Tauck launched the ms Swiss Sapphire in 2008, it was barely
wet when it won Travel Weekly’s Magellan Award honoring the
“Best in the Travel Industry” – the only riverboat to win a “Gold.”
All of that experience since that first cruise in 1992 had really
paid off.
