Taking “Tauck Style” to Europe
Arthur Jr., Scott Supernaw and Herbert Wiese are
naturals at building brilliant itineraries. They are all
great storytellers and each new journey they created
unfolds like a story to be cherished for life. The real
problem they faced was getting European hoteliers
to deal with Tauck in a fundamentally different
way than they treated other tour groups staying at
their hotels.
Large, price-driven tour operators dominated the
business in Europe. Many of the finest hotels,
especially beautiful centrally-located grand properties,
would not accept tour groups. Where groups were
accepted, the tour participants were not treated as
individuals. This was all very different than the
“Tauck Style” of travel. For example, Tauck had to
get the right hotels to accept such Tauck standards
as no group check-in, guests addressed individually
by name and à la carte dining.
Arthur was deeply worried about their ability
to create the same type of “Tauck experience”
in Europe as in North America. It took a lot of
persuasion and much hard work from a large team
of Tauck professionals on dozens of development
trips over five years. Many of those original
doubting suppliers have become some of Tauck’s
best endorsers.
