Tauck Goes “Down Under”
When asked about “dream vacations,” upscale travelers
typically place Australia and New Zealand at the top of
the list.
When Peter Tauck and his product development
team set out to develop a grand tour of both Australia
and New Zealand, the challenges were significant. One
was how to efficiently cover the great distances between
many of the desired destinations. This was solved when
Milford Sound,
they put together a total of ten internal air flights;
New Zealand
including a private charter flight in New Zealand,
which eliminated a long drive up the South Island.
The other challenge was finding and creating the
unique experiences Tauck travelers had come to expect.
One discovery would put Tauck on the forefront of
“Eco Tourism.” The team arranged for an exclusive stay
at Silky Oaks Lodge, a unique hideaway on the border of
the Daintree National Park that features private cabins
built in the style of tree houses. This park contains the
oldest rainforest in the world and added another
World Heritage Site, alongside the Great Barrier Reef.
Guests also stayed at a working cattle ranch and would
see firsthand the Aboriginal culture of the outback of
Australia. Another example of a unique experience was
a private dinner aboard a tramcar while touring the city
of Melbourne.
Although other tour operators would soon copy
some of these experiences, Tauck led the way.
