Authentic Hawaiiana
Expanding to Hawaii in 1964 represented a significant
watershed in Tauck’s history. Arthur Jr. had his
doubts about the decision: Hawaii was still a very
exotic destination; the distance from the company’s
headquarters was incredible; they had no relationships
with needed suppliers and it might hurt their
bookings to Florida. At the urging of long-time
tour director, sales manager and Hawaii advocate,
Bill Rother, Arthur and his wife, Lee, took a detailed
familiarity tour of the islands. Perhaps it was the good
omen of catching a trophy blue marlin, but Arthur
made up his mind and decided to take the gamble.
Like always, an innovative approach was taken.
Tauck went beyond Oahu to explore the lesser-known
islands of Maui, Kauai, Molokai and the “Big Island”
of Hawaii. Tauck saw that the real magic of this island
paradise is that its unrivaled natural beauty is coupled
with a 2,000 year-old history rich in culture… and that
each island is unique and should be explored for its
legends, music and lore.
Tauck carried over 15,000 guests a year to Hawaii
on the deluxe 5-island tour; an amazing feat! In fact,
Hawaiian Airlines even painted one of their planes
with the Tauck colors and logo… dedicated to flying
Tauck’s guests. Hawaii was one of the most successful
launches in the history of Tauck and served as a
harbinger of destinations to follow.
First Motor Coach Tour Link with Canada
Upon the completion of the Trans-Canada
Highway, Tauck introduces first motor coach tour
linking the Canadian Rockies to the West Coast.
