First Air Charter
Having served with the U.S. Air Force in Germany, Arthur
Jr. returned in 1956 convinced that air travel was the future.
He proposed that Tauck charter airplanes and create the
first air/land tour to Nova Scotia. His father disagreed.
There were significant financial risks should they have
trouble filling the charters or if flights had to be canceled due
to bad weather.
The two Arthurs argued fiercely although Arthur Jr.
eventually persevered. He then had to take on the entire
airline industry that vehemently opposed his application
to the Civil Aeronautics Board to charter flights. This legal
battle involved a rare and successful Congressional Review of
an earlier Supreme Court decision known as The Tauck Case.
Arthur had yet another problem. The Halifax Airport was
often fogged in and as many as 30% of the flights might
not be able to land. Diverted flights to Halifax landed at
the Greenwood military base, which was relatively fog free.
To everyone’s surprise, Arthur convinced the Canadian
Department of National Defense to allow him to operate in
and out of Greenwood.
This is a good example of providing access to experiences
that travelers simply can’t get on their own. By conceiving
of the idea of these charters and then overcoming seemingly
insurmountable obstacles to make them a reality, Tauck
increased the amount of time its guests would have to enjoy
a destination.
Based on Arthur Jr.’s success, Arthur Sr. turned the reigns
of the company over to his son.
