bloodlines. This year they are using Deangate Harris, by De Vennen Egbert, and Kirkby Pax, who is a son of Piet Adema 186. “We look for bulls that score highly for the health traits, particularly for longevity, daughter fertility and SCC,” comments Sam. “We also prefer to use bulls with high fat and protein percents.”

Most of the cows are served with Friesian semen and the bull calves are sold to a local buyer who rears them on a 15 month conventional bull beef system. Aberdeen- Angus semen is used on some of the cows and Sam rears the bull calves organically to supply Waitrose, which has worked well. Sam registered the Leasbeck prefi x in 2007, using the name of the Leas beck which runs alongside the farm buildings. “We purchased 20 cows at the 2007 Blackisle dispersal sale and since then we have bought additional groups of young stock from the Catlane and Culverness herds and some animals at the Raby sale in November 2014. These included the sale’s top priced animal, Raby Jasmine 59 BFV89 by Blackisle Garve, and Raby Anemone 170, a Marshside Discovery 2 daughter of Raby Anemone 165 BFE90 by Blackisle Benloyal.” The Olivia family from Blackisle is developing well at Leasbeck. Blackisle Olivia 81, by Failand Breadwin, was classifi ed BFE90 in her fi fth lactation having

given 8040kg in 305 days at 4.43% fat and 3.52% protein in her fourth lactation. She has an outstanding daughter, Leasbeck Olivia BFV88 by Huddlesford Doraman, who is the dam of Leasbeck Olivia 2 BFG83 by Blackisle Monarch - a promising young cow that completes three generations milking in the herd.

“Catlane Juror Marina 2 BFV86 is another impressive young cow, from the same branch of the Marina family that bred the well known AI sire Catlane Metropolis.”

Sam is quite nervous about taking on his new role with the BFBC, but the membership is pleased and consider him an excellent choice for this important job, says Bill Foster. “Sam is keen to work closely with the experienced committee members that have done such a good job over the years. But he is also keen to involve more new younger members to ensure the continued success for the Friesian breed. The future looks to be in good hands.”
