CLUBS ONLINE SHROPSHIRE

The Shropshire Club started the New Year, with 40 members attending a presentation from our area delegate Mark Nutsford. Mark gave an insight in to his activities at home at Riverdane Holsteins and the cows he is working with and also in to his own ET business which takes him the length and breadth of the country. He also explained his activities within Holstein UK as our delegate and gave a brief update of events and plans for the future for Holstein UK. The 13th

January was the funeral of Alan Cope who died following a lengthy illness, he was a popular character and well known within the Holstein world. At the end of January we held our annual Black Tie Dinner Dance and presentation evening at the Tern Hill Hall Hotel. The evening went well and following a lovely meal were the formalities which included a short speech by Randolph Miller our HUK President. Herd competition judge for 2014, Hefin Wilson from Tregibby Holsteins expressed his pleasure at visiting so many great herds featuring some great cows which he said Shropshire should rightly be very proud of.

Particular note should be made of the unique achievement of Robert and Hilda Clare at Hawksmoor Holsteins who not only won the champion Shropshire herd for the fourth year in a row, which has not been done before in over 50 years of this competition, but also won the Progeny Group with daughters of Hawksmoor Roman for the fifth year in a row which has also never been done before - an outstanding achievement. James Tomlinson from the Bilsrow herd came down from Lancashire on 2nd

activities at home. His presentation featured developments with new housing and rearing sheds with particular emphasis on comfort and ventilation for both cows and calves.

James also featured some of his favourite cows and gave some thoughts regarding the future of the dairy industry. The summer programme is in hand and will be detailed in The Journal when complete.

SOUTH EASTERN

The South Eastern Club had a great turnout at meetings last year, in particular for the talk from Richard and Ruth Pilkington from the Aintree herd and at the farm walk and hog roast at Guston Holsteins in Dover. The Club enjoyed a breeding talk from Wynn Jones of the Premier Herd winning Feithy herd in March. Over the next few months we have an action packed calendar culminating with the final stock judging at Oncoland. The first practice will be held at Thakeham Holsteins.

The Club has also made available funds from the Anthony Freeman Memorial Fund to sponsor a young member from the Club to travel abroad to a Holstein Show.
