Fantastic four earn Futures opportunity with Cogent

Four young cattle breeding enthusiasts from all over the UK have seen off the competition to become finalists in Cogent’s Futures Programme 2015. The Futures Programme offers participants an insight into the life of a sire analyst. As part of the competition, finalists Tom Hull from Lancashire, Andrew Patterson from Northern Ireland, Carys Jones from Monmouthshire and Scott McLean from Northern Ireland will visit a range of dairy herds across the UK and match suitable sires to potential bull mothers.

Their suggested matings will be presented to Cogent’s genetics committee, with the highest scoring candidate receiving an elite embryo package and the chance for their resulting bull to enter the Cogent stud under their own prefix.

In addition, the overall winner and runner-up will be taken on an all-inclusive trip to Holland to attend the Tulip Sale and HHH show to gain an insight into the latest breeding strategies.

New Arrivals Charity fundraising

Jackie Clark, classification co-ordinator, and her family would like to thank Holstein UK for donating a prize for their Annual Valentines Charity Disco. They are delighted to have raised a fantastic £1906 for two worthy charities, Michael Sobell House and MIND. A great time was had by everyone who attended dancing the night away to some classic 80s’ tunes.

CIS raise money

At the National Calf show CIS staff supplied free refreshments for exhibitors and spectators. At the request of the some Welsh members a plate for donations was put out, with proceeds going to charity. The CIS team is pleased to announce that £261.24 was donated and has been presented to agricultural associated charities, RABI and RSABI.

ABOVE LEFT Thomas Samuel Perry, who was born on 19th November 2014, weighing 8lb 12 oz to Stuart and Caroline Perry of the Dalwood herd in Devon. Thomas made a very speedy and unplanned arrival at home, which at least meant that Stuart could still pop down to the parlour and finish milking.

ABOVE RIGHT Rossett and Whitehouse Holsteins are proud to announce the arrival of a new family member, Mia Victoria Matthews who was born on the 18th January. She is a new grandaughter to Andrew and Jenny Jones (Rossett) and daughter to Dave and Vicky Matthews (Whitehouse) with Vicky having grown up in HYB we hope to see Mia in a pair of show whites in the not too distant future.

If you have a birth, marriage or death to report in the family, please send details to journal@holstein-uk.org so that we can record the event and let other members know.
