Despite the current downturn in the milk market demand for quality pedigree cows and heifers remained strong with 27 selling for £2000 or more.
Second top at 2900gns was the pre-sale champion Ortongrange
Talented Jazz Red, classified VG88 she calved in November with her second and sold giving 40kg a day. She is out of a Rustler Red sired dam which is backed by eight generations of VG or EX dams. She now joins the Grangehall herd of Andrew and Euan Lawrie, Lanark. Staying with the Ortongrange production sale and Ortongrange Lawnboy Velvet Red sold at 2850gns to Holehouse Farms, Kilbirnie. Classified VG86 she calved with her second in November and was producing 41kg a day.
At 2800gns Messrs Agnew purchased the VG85 Ortongrange Apple May Red, this November calved heifer is the third generation VG or EX. Her dam is the VG87 Ortongrange Raid Amy Red, a Buckhorn-Acres Raid-Red daughter. Andrew and Euan Lawrie paid 2800gns for Ortongrange Shottle Ghost, an EX90 scored second calver. She is the tenth generation of VG or EX out of Riverdane Silky Ghost VG88 who is a daughter of the reserve Royal and National Holstein Show champion Ridgefield Storm Ghost. Fresh in December she sold giving 41kg. The highest price from the Border and Lakeland Club section at 2600gns was Boclair Triumphant Camilla 4 from David Brewster. Backed by three generations of VG or EX, her dam is the VG85 scored Boclair Convincer Camilla. She also joins the Lawrie’s Grangehall herd. Also joining the Grangehall herd was Wormanby Dude Hatsumer from Harry and David Hodgson at 2500gns. This two year old heifer is out of the EX92 Wormanby Shark Hatsumer who completed 10 lactations. At the same money was Ortongrange Captain Flirt, a fresh second calver by Glen-Valley Captain. She is out of the EX91 Ortongrange Design Flirt and sold to Messrs Agnew, Stranraer. Skipton Dairy Sale A small offering of 15 dairy cattle at Skipton on 26th January reflected trade across the country with quality milkers most sought after. Trade peaked at £2020 for the second prize and reserve
champion winner Aireburn Windbrook Kneirke from Brian Moorhouse. Three weeks fresh and giving 32 litres she is out of a VG scored homebred dam and sold to Wick Williams, Nantwich, Cheshire.
Just behind that at £2000 was Peter Baul’s pre- sale champion Ravensgate Garrison Honesty 152, also three weeks calved and giving 34 litres she was another acquisition of Wick Williams. Averages: pedigree heifers in milk £1866, commercial heifers £1458. (CCM Auction)
German cattle lead trade at Beeston Month End Sale The January Wright Marshall Month End Sale which included the sale of European heifers attracted buyers from Scotland to West Wales. Leading trade at £2750 was a May calved heifer from Christian Bielfeld’s herd at Osnabruck, Germany. BIL Faunella is by the German sire Beauty and is backed by four generations of the F family tracing back to the noted show cow Fiere EX96. She sold in-calf to Missouri and due in May and joins the Weavermos herd, Cholmondely, Malpas. Next best at £2300 was a May 2014-born maiden heifer, Praise also from Christian Bielfeld. Sired by Boldi VSG Anton she is out of six generations of VG dams from the P line at Welcome Farm, USA. In the top 10% of genomic heifers in Germany this heifer sold to Woodhey Holsteins, Nantwich. The top price for UK cattle was £2100 for Crystalclear BA Susie Mist, a fresh heifer bred by Mark and Anne Lee and consigned by Sam Wake. This Bolivia Allen daughter is from the well known family originating from Croagh Holsteins. She was knocked down to Messrs L G Brigham and Sons for their Easthaugh herd, Norwich. Two heifers sold at £2000 from the first consignment to disperse Ken and Andy Morris’ Heathgreen herd, Redditch. The first was a December calved Gillette Jordan daughter giving 36kg a day and purchased by G N Morris, Sontley, Wrexham. At the same money was a Talent sired heifer that calved in October and gave 40kg a day, she was knocked down to D and J Armstrong for their Armsdale herd, Bunbury. Brian Parker, Haughton, Stafford, then paid £1900 for a Shottle sired heifer from J E G James, Northampton. Averages: UK cattle 22 cows £1252.27, 44 milking heifers £1447.47, two in-calf £1080, Denmark: 16 Cows £1338.13, 52 Heifers £1291.91, Germany: 18 served heifers £1178.88, 64 maiden heifers £916.88. Slopers Friesian dispersal peaks at 2400gns The dispersal of David and Jane Gibbs’ organic Slopers herd of Friesian Holsteins at Hartpury, Gloucester, saw trade peak at 2400gns. Top price was a fourth calved Dovea Bass daughter, calved in May she is due again in June to Winnoch Umpire. She sold to R J House and Son, Wincanton, Somerset.
Next best at 2150gns was a Deangate Quentin sired heifer. Fresh in October she sold to R P Sainsbury and Sons, Badminton, South Gloucestershire.
