plenty happening since then. The All Britain Awards have been judged and the results have been announced with the standard as high as ever. This issue’s theme has been new entrants and despite the current market volatility I have been encouraged by the optimism on farm. It is encouraging that Holstein herds are still being built from scratch and there are new, enthusiastic breeders coming in to the industry.
Expert written articles look at a variety of topics this time including extracting the most from the ration, how to prepare business plans and opportunities to get in to dairy farming. They all provide thought provoking ideas that will hopefully be of interest to all members. There is also a round up from the British Cattle Breeders Conference and the Semex Conference, both well attended events gave plenty of ideas to delegates. It was certainly apparent that volatility is here to stay in the industry.
UK Dairy Expo at Carlisle has yet again grown on last year’s show and is well established as the leading spring show in the UK. The show of Holstein cattle was outstanding and as seen at AgriScot and UK Dairy Day the quality only improved as the cows got older.
Feithy Open Day – Saturday 27th
It was encouraging to see such an excellent mature cow class with 15 cows forward judge Hank Van Excel commented: “I have judged at International Dairy Week, World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair and never have I seen an aged cow like this. The quality from top to bottom is outstanding.” This shows that the breed has turned a corner and longevity is more prominent.
June
Premier herd winners for 2014, the Jones family from the Feithy herd, are preparing to host an open day and TAG sale on Saturday 27th
June on farm at Cilfeithy-
Uchaf, Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales, SA17 5AR. This will give people the opportunity to view the 190-head herd which comprises 72 EX, 95 VG and 20 GP two year olds averaging 10,410kg at 4.32%bf and 3.13%p.
Looking forward there is a lot coming up and the summer show season will be well underway by the next issue.
AGM and financial year
2015 AGM Saturday 17th October at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern. 2016 AGM followed by the next Presidential & NED elections to take place on Wednesday 8th June 2016 at the Village Urban Resort, Blackpool. Please note due to the above changes there will be no Holstein Celebration held in 2015. In line with membership acquisitions, we have also moved our financial year from the standard financial year to the calendar year.
Scotsbridge House is on the market
Scotsbridge House is for sale subject to achieving planning permission to increase asset value. Establishing ready capital for more strategic reinvestment is consistent with the company’s core values, objectives and charity requirements. We are currently searching for more suitable offices to relocate the locally based team.
