Lifetime Achievement Award for Sam McCormick

Sam McCormick of the Hiltara herd, Bangor, has been announced as the 2015 winner of the John Dennison Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, presented at UK Dairy Expo, is in memory of the highly regarded breeder of the Denmire Holsteins, John Dennison of Scales

Park Farm, Ulverston, and is presented by his family to the person judged to be an exemplary role model to the industry.

Sam is a former chairman of the Holstein Breeders Society in Ireland and is one of the breed’s leading figures throughout the UK. Commenting on his influence on the industry John Dennison’s son Michael said: ”Sam has contributed a great deal to the Holstein movement and breed in his working lifetime. His passion, work ethic and strong drive for quality within his herd make him an ideal recipient of this award.”

“Sam and my father were industry contemporaries and we, as a family are delighted to present this award in his name.” Born and brought up in Bangor, Northern Ireland, Sam currently milks 290 cows, with a herd average of 10,000 litres. He is supported by his whole family including his wife, Trish, and son, John, who are both integral to the development of the Hilltara Herd.

The Hilltara prefix is well known throughout the UK and Ireland and, with a staggering 80 EX and 150 VG cattle in the current herd, Sam strives to breed great Holstein cattle.

Sam himself was overcome to be presented with the award. He said: “This is a total surprise and I am absolutely delighted to accept this award. We welcomed John himself to our farm and he was without a doubt a true champion. To receive this award is a great achievement for everyone involved on our family farm.”

Competition Continuing his HYB success and demonstration of Holstein knowledge, Jonathan Woodhouse is this year’s All Britain Awards 2014 Judging Competition winner. Vicki gets on her bike

Vicki Ellis, CIS manager in the South West, is cycling the Prudential Ride-London 100 this year and raising money for Scope at the same time. This is Vicki’s second year in the event, having taken part last year, but Hurricane Burtha joined the action and wasn’t the best of company.

“The route was reduced and two hills were removed for safety reasons, so I felt a bit cheated and want to do the full 100 miles,” explains Vicki. Anyone wishing to support Vicki can do so at her fundraising page - http://www.virginmoneygiving. com/VictoriaEllis4

Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else and provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year. They raise awareness of the issues that matter. Every little helps and Vicki is grateful for any donations to such a worthy cause and all money raised goes straight to the Charity.
