Park Farm, Kelston, purchased 14 cattle including two October calved Lakemead Rancher daughters, both in their second lactation they made 2150gns and 2000gns. The same buyer also paid 2100gns for a Tittenser Hylke third calver. Youngstock sold to 920gns for a Deangate Quentin sired bulling heifer, which was knocked down to A E Allen and Son, Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Overwater Holstein herd sells to a top of £2500
The dispersal of the milking and in-calf portion of the Maughan family’s Overwater herd at Beeston Castle saw trade peak at £2500 for Overwater Seabreeze 266. Classified VG85 this Cogent Twist daughter calved in June and is due again in April to Sabbiona Goldfarm. She sold giving 33kg a day to Alan Vernon, Ash, Whitchurch. Next best at £2250 was Overwater Baillies Pine 7, a GP82 Decker daughter that is due with her second calf in July to Foxberry J S McFly. She sold to A A Winstanley and Partners, Audlem.
Not far behind at £2200 was the highest priced fresh heifer Overwater Baillies Rachel 6, this daughter of Bassingthorpe Drayman sold giving 36.2 kg to Garnett Farms, Knutsford. Served heifers sold up to 1900gns on three occasions, for Woodmarsh Lotto and Aquilla Shottle Crival daughters. Summer calvers were a steadier trade making a top of 1420gns for another Lotto sired heifer. Averages: 134 cows and milking heifers £1028.29, 51 in-calf heifers £1438.50, 13 recently served and maiden heifers £804.46 (Wright Marshall)
Holstein bulls trade to 5000gns in Northern Ireland Trade at Northern Ireland’s 25th Annual Spring Bull Sale peaked at 5000gns with an overall clearance of 78%. Sale leader was the pre-sale champion Relough Ross, a 15 month old Co-op Bosside Massey son from Ronald, Malcolm and Barry McLean. He is out of the VG89 Relough Legend Rosie 2 who gave 10,200kg at 4.47%bf and 3.46%p in her second lactation and is backed by nine generations of EX cows. Buying him was James Cummings, Castlederg, Co Tyrone. Next best at 4750gns was Ian and Kenny Watson’s third prize Majestic Galaxy Alert which sold to Gordon Fulton, Dromore, Co Tyrone. Backed by nine generations of VG and EX dams this De Su Freddie Galaxy son is out of Majestic Earnit Annette a VG two year old who is the number one GTPI Earnit daughter in Europe. Alert is a full brother to Majestic Galaxy Alfie, one of the highest PLI bulls in the Genus ABS Stud with PLI of £511. Steven Robinson’s honourable mention winner Cluntagh Amazon traded at 4200gns. This September 2013 born Wabash Way Explode son is out of Larcrest Cambria VG87, a Goldwyn daughter. He was knocked
down to Gordon McCully, Ballyward, Co Down. Following close behind at 4000gns was the reserve PLI winner Relough Gala from the McLean family. Carrying a PLI of £407 this De Su Freddie Galaxy son is out of Relough Iota Gloriette VG86 two year old who gave 10,476kg at 4.24%bf and 3.20% p in her first 305 day lactation. Backed by eight generations of VG and EX dams he sold to Alastair Barclay from Dunloy, Co Antrim.
The McLean family had a solid trade on the day with their nine bulls averaging £3068 a head. They also secured the reserve championship with Relough Richter PLI £373 and the PLI award with Relough Dynasty PLI £413.
The reserve champion Relough Richter realised 3650gns when he sold to Messrs T and W A McKinney, Maghera, Co Londonderry. Sired by the homebred Regancrest Altaiota son Relough Generate – a high genomic bull in the Genus ABS stud, he is backed by nine generations of EX dams. At 3400gns was the youngest bull in the catalogue and one of the highest PLI bulls ever to be offered for sale at public auction, Prehen Franklyn. This was from Robbie and Stuart Smith, Londonderry. This yearling Rosy-Lane LLC Altabarney son carries a PLI of £538 and is out of the number six PLI cow in the UK, Prehen Justice Froukje. Backed by nine generations of VG and EX dams, this bull is a maternal brother to Prehen Fruition at Genus ABS and sold to David Matthews, Omagh, Co Tyrone. Average: 28 bulls £2539. (Taaffe Auctions)
Senterprise herd lead Craven Dairy trade The February Craven Dairy Auction saw Fred and Mark Houseman’s Senterprise Fidelity Greta 2 lead trade at £2000. This pre-sale champion by Delta Fidelity is out of Senterprise Potter Greta. She sold giving 31 litres a day to Alf and Andrew Townsend, Southfield, Burnley. Second top of a small offering of eight dairy cows and heifers at £1980 was John Robinson with a homebred pedigree red and white heifer. Producing 30kg a day she sold to Wick Williams, Nantwich. Tony and James Swires’ Regancrest Ilar sired heifer stood second and reserve champion, she was eight days fresh and giving 28 litres. She sold, alongside her herd mate who stood third for £1920 each to the show judge Shaun Sowray, Bishop Thornton.
£2150 top at Gisburn Dairy Sale Trade at Gisburn Auction in February was up to £2150 for the first prize fresh heifer from Jeremy Taylor. This O-Man End Story sired heifer sold a fortnight calved and giving 36 litres a day to a herd at Longridge, Preston.
The same buyer then paid £2120 for Lee Donkin’s second prize heifer by Kepculloch Douglas. She was two and a half weeks fresh and giving 30 litres on sale day.
Dairy cattle sell well at Beeston Mid Month The February Mid Month Sale at Beeston had plenty to offer buyers with 309 head forward, the largest collective one day sale in the country and a complete clearance for all 236 milkers
