forward. Leading trade at £2450 were Graham and Barbara Bell with a homebred Scientific Destry sired heifer. Sold 11 days fresh and giving 34kg she found a new home in South Wales. Next best at £2250 was a fresh heifer by Wyman from D and A C Shakeshaft, giving 30kg she sold to R Williams, Crewe. Three heifers traded at £2200, all giving more than 32kg the heifers came from J E G James, Northampton, Jack and Barclay Taylor, Shrewsbury, and Enchanted Holsteins, Preston. Sired by Metalic, Xray and A L H Courier, two were purchased by D and H E Colclough and Son, Sandbach, and the other R Williams, Crewe. Repeated calls of £2150 for heifers came for vendors with quality consignments including Andrew and Jenny Jones, James Kippax, Jack and Barclay Taylor, Peter Waring and Portway Farms. Cows with plenty of milk, strength and youthfulness sold well with Andrew Shakeshaft’s second calved Debonair daughter led trade for this section. Classified VG as a heifer she sold giving 39kg a day. At £2050 and £1950 were second calvers by a son of Goldwyn also from Andrew Shakeshaft’s Dilandy herd, both sold to Messrs Hughes, South Wales.


At £1100 was the best price for maiden and recently served heifers, this one by Nethanvale Mel and from the Roxy family was a month served and consigned by R W and V L Jones and Sons, Chester. The same home also sold open heifers to £980, this was paid for a 14 month old Memphis sired heifer out of eight generations of VG or EX dams from the Anna family.


Heifer calves consistently sold between £200 and £320 to average £281. While two week old Holstein calves were up to £270 for entries from R G and S K Evans. Averages: 50 cows £1422.20 (including 19 Focus Milk cows), 162 milking heifers £1682.24 (including 116 Focus Milk heifers); 20 in-calf and served heifers £1253.50, 41 maiden heifers £730.73, 14 heifer calves £281.43. Sedgemoor Dairy sale peaks at 2050gns Leading the monthly dairy sale at Sedgemoor Auction in February at 2050gns was Dorset Topshot Finch from Dimond Farming. Sired by Woodmarsh Topshot this heifer was giving 31kgs at the time of sale.


Robert Horton sold a consignment of 13 fresh heifers from his Hinton herd to average just under £1950. A two year old daughter of Vortex Dekko from the Robthom family sold at 2000gns having calved in December and giving 41.4kg. The second calved Ciderhouse Salvatore Rachel GP84 from David and Valerie Norman sold at 1900gns. Sired by the Armstead son Aintree Salvatore she is out of a VG87 scored dam by Paulo- Bro Cel Jasper.


At 1600gns was the best of a batch of 30 cows and heifers from Bailey Brothers, Beaminster. Their leader was a second lactation cow by Gillette Jordan that sold giving 35kgs having calved 17 days. While in-calf heifers were up to 1200gns for a Regancrest S Isley daughter due in the spring. Averages: calved cows £1714.13, calved heifers £1808.19, in-calf heifers £1200, yearling heifers £400, Bailey Brothers cows and heifers £1386.42. (Greenslade Taylor Hunt)


Lomond Windbrook Tory makes 5000gns at Carlisle


Attracting a 5000gns bid to lead trade at Carlisle was the much admired Lomond Windbrook Tory from Jane Steel. This heifer combines enormous potential to be a show heifer with a super pedigree including nine generations of VG or EX cows from the famous Wilsondale Triuna family.


Sired by Windbrook she stood reserve champion in the pre-sale show under judge Gilmour Lawrie before falling under the hammer to Brian and Michael Yates

for their Logan herd. Second top at 2800gns was Wormanby Goldfish Gloriette from Harry, Margaret and David Hodgson. This August 2012-born heifer is out of seven generations of VG or EX with her dam being a VG88 scored Shottle. Fresh at the end of January she sold to Holehouse Farms, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. Matthew Armour’s Annandale Mizuno Liga traded at 2400gns to Tom Forsyth, Whithorn. She is by ALH Regan Mizuno and out of Annandale Megastar Liga EX90. The pre-sale champion Espland Jordan Nancy


2, a Gillette Jordan sired heifer from D I and A A Cannon made 2300gns when she sold to J and J Barr, Cowdenbeath, Fife. Her dam is a Shottle daughter that gave 9620kg at 3.98%bf and 3.49%p in her second lactation.


Making 2200gns to Messrs Bryson, Mauchline,


was Niscot Hayden Judy from Messrs Scott. This Hayden sired heifer is out of a dam by Armstead. Annshill Bluesky Lilac from M and G Struthers made 2000gns to Askam Bryan College. This Galastar Bluesky daughter is out of a Pennview Income sired dam. Averages: two cows in milk £1581.30, 56 heifers in milk £1781.85. (Harrison and Hetherington)


Dairy trade reaches £1820 at Skipton Trade reached a high of £1820 at Skipton’s dairy auction on the 23rd February, with the top price paid for the reserve champion from the pre-sale show, a fresh calved heifer from Chris Bradley’s Brimrock herd, Burnt Yates, Harrogate. This heifer from the Panda family sold giving 31kg a day at 132 days calved and is by Hydaways Goldmine. She headed to Brimham Lodge with Neil, Sue and Gavin Gratton.


The first prize fresh calved cow from Keith Downs sold for £1600 to show judge Richard Crabtree, who runs a commercial dairy herd at Clifton, Otley, with his father, Gordon, and uncle, Rowland. Average: £1420. (Craven Cattle Auctions).
