he prestigious President’s Medal Award 2014 saw Holstein Young Breeder (HYB) members from all parts of the UK enter. Emerging victorious at the prize giving at the Semex Conference, Glasgow, was Staffordshire HYB member Thomas Hill.

Following the initial nomination and essay, all eight candidates faced the panel of judges at Telford to decide who made the fi nal three. This year’s nominees were Matthew Williamson (Border & Lakeland), Tom Stable (Lancashire), Emily Rout (Norfolk), Leiza Montgomery (NI), and Thomas Hill (Staffordshire), Charlotte Cope (Shropshire), Matthew House (South West) and Georgina Fort (Yorkshire). The panel of judges were Holstein UK President Randolph Miller, Peter Arthur – Marketing Manager for Semex UK and Andrew Birkle – Non-Executive Director of Marketing for Holstein UK.

This eagerly anticipated competition is one of the highest accolades for any HYB member and the judges were looking for an all round ambassador for the Society. Commenting on the fi nalists Randolph Miller said all of those interviewed had been passionate advocates for both the Holstein breed and UK dairy farming. “With young- sters of this calibre coming in to the industry and showing tremendous dedication to the dairy sector we have a lot of potential for the future.

“The current milk price issues may deter some from entering the dairy industry, but it is clear to me having

judged this award that there are a great many forward thinking young people with a passion for dairying which will help them overcome any adversity they face,” he added.

Thomas is a keen member of Staffordshire HYB and has been competing at national level for 16 years. He now works on the family farm where they milk 150 Holstein cows through robotic milkers.
