commercial herd were made at Crewe pedigree sales and dispersals. “I didn’t have a big budget to buy cattle, one of my first purchases was Burwren Cinderella 14, a Grove Helmsman daughter bought for 500gns with the family still strong today. “Nowadays one of the most prominent families is the Present family with 40 milking members from this family. The line started from Garstay Star Present who was purchased for 1600gns at the Garstay Production Sale in 1993. “The family has grown quickly and they all have a good stamp and are long living. Currently four Present heifers are milking in the herd, all classified VG two year

olds and nine generations VG or EX.”

Other families include the Floras from Spoondale, Quinces and Polyanths from the Delph herd as well as the Lively family which has bred numerous Excellent cows and stem from commercial bulling heifers that were purchased and graded up.

Regular classification is seen as an excellent management tool and the herd currently consists of 20 Excellent and 40 Very Good cows with only two scoring below 80 points.

And when it comes to breeding Robert is keen to focus on type to maximise longevity and function. “I look for for the highest type bulls and not necessarily high milk bulls.
