Some questions for Gary
Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day? Answer: I do not have much time for hobbies, but nothing helps me switch off more than playing cards. The need to stay alert throughout a poker game is a great distraction from the day to day. I will play a few games a week at my poker club or alternatively I’ll binge watch my favourite T.V. shows until I’ve switched off enough to go to sleep.
Question: What do you like most about being a Telecommunications Specialist?
Answer: The constant challenge to bring value for money telecoms services to islanders. I want to help create competition in the local market and give customers a choice in their services.
Question: What do you most dislike about being a Telecommunications Specialist?
Answer: As you are dealing with incumbent infrastructure it can be a challenge working with regulators and competitors to make the changes we need to create an affordable and robust telecoms market for customers.
Question: How did you become a Telecommunications Specialist? Answer: The truth is being in the right place at the right time. My wife sold me my first mobile phone and we started a business venture together. As I was exploring the future for our mobile telecoms business an opportunity arose to work with Cable and Wireless to offer competition to British Telecoms in the UK market and we grasped it with both hands. We worked night and day to make sure it was a success resulting in a multi-million-pound business being created and then sold to Carphone Warehouse where it was renamed TalkTalk.
the dog for a walk. I am a huge T.V. and film fan so normally end the day watching some T.V. with my wife. However, I am guilty of watching classics like Bond into the early hours of the morning; but as long as I get four hours sleep, I’m good to go.
One of the ways I relax is to play poker and I am fortunate enough to have played with some of the best players in the world. I have competed in the World Series on several occasions. Poker is a great way of testing your ability to read people which is a fantastic trait for life.
Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Telecommunications Specialist?
Answer: Don’t ask anybody to do anything you wouldn’t do yourself. Ideally, start at the bottom, maybe in the call centres and get to know the customers and the day-to-day demands of the industry. Get experience off island if you can. Then aim high, always be honest and do not be afraid of proposing new innovative solutions. Say yes to opportunities even if they eat into your free time. You will get out what you put in, so be passionate about what you are doing, keep going, put the work in and you will succeed. Carpe Diem (Seize the day)!
