Some questions for Josh

Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day? Answer:

I enjoy nothing more than slobbing out on the sofa watching crime documentaries with my better half.

Question: What do you like most about being a Project Manager at a Building Company?

Answer: I love the variety of the work. Every project has different requirements and I really enjoy meeting new people and helping them achieve their property goals. The banter on site is a different level to the office environment I was used to.

Question: What do you most dislike about being a Project Manager at a Building Company?

Answer: Lots of paperwork – it is a necessary evil of the industry.

Question: How did you become a Project Manager at a Building Company?

Answer: Partly luck, partly judgement. Having spent my post school years in the finance industry, the opportunity arose to work for the Havard Group in a marketing support position. My role in the prevailing 18 months has expanded massively. The rest, they say, is history.

Over the past six months, I have also completed two qualifications to enhance my knowledge and grow the offerings of the business. In March 2020, I passed the Practical HSPC & Applied Design Risk Management course and in September 2020, I passed the Water Restoration Technician course offered by the IICRC. I aim to take an Advance Structural Drying course, offered by the IICRC, in 2021. If an employer offers the opportunity to apply to training courses like these, staff should definitely do so as it makes them more valuable members of the team.

I finish work between 17.00p.m. and 17.30p.m. most days and make every effort to get home as quickly as possible to help with the evening routine as well as trying to relax.

My girlfriend, Lauren, and I are in the process of buying our first home together, so we are spending lots of time choosing furniture and such like. Exciting and very expensive.

I am a huge football fan and have a season ticket at Old Trafford. I usually get to a few games a season watching my beloved Manchester United at the Theatre of Dreams (or Nightmares depending on who we are playing).

I am an obsessive follower of politics around the globe and may consider a run for office in Jersey in the future. Let’s be honest, it can’t get much worse than some of the current, uninspiring incumbents!

After a long week’s work, at the weekend I try to spend as much time as possible with my family and friends as well as working on my side ventures – I try to have a finger in as many pies as possible.

Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Project Manager at a Building Company?

Answer: You can only become truly accomplished at something you love doing. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that you can make money from it.

I try to live my life by the following motto: “As long as you’re going to be thinking anyway, think big”.

Beyond 20/20 A day in the life of...
