Waterfront from the Jersey Development Company includes a new indoor pool replacing Aquasplash which would be demolished as part of the scheme. It may be possible that gym and class facilities could be provided in the aptly-named ‘Leisure Quarter‘ to compensate in the longer term for the loss of facilities at Fort Regent. That is at least 10 years away, so the States will have to provide an alternative around town for Active Card members should the Fort be closed.

Some of the Fort’s lost capacity could be taken up at an extended Springfield site but in reality it is likely that some outdoor space might be required. The current 3G pitch has a lifetime of up to 10 years but its future depends on its use by the Jersey Bulls Football Club. Jersey Bulls are likely to gain at least two promotions in coming years to compete at a higher level in the English league requiring quite extensive ground improvements at Springfield. This may be difficult from a planning perspective as residents are located so close to the ground. A solution might be for the Bulls to share grounds with the Jersey Reds Rugby Club who want to

improve their facilities at St. Peter. Should the Bulls agree to a groundshare and the Jersey Football Association also considers playing fixtures elsewhere, then Springfield could be extended to provide more of a sports and community hub and potentially offer more open space for nearby residents in a part of town desperately short of amenities.

As far as the rugby site at St. Peter is concerned, in September 2018 I advocated a national stadium for Jersey that could be located at the home of Jersey rugby at St. Peter. It is an idea that has been around for some time, but now may be the right time to invest in the first step towards creating a purpose-built stadium. Introducing a new hybrid ‘4G‘ surface at St. Peter would allow far greater use which would benefit both sports. Co- location could also have financial benefits for both parties, and for the States, it would mean improvements could be made at Springfield to the benefit of the wider community.

Providing a hybrid surface and see how the relationship builds between the Bulls, the Reds and the JFA, could be the precursor for a purpose-built

stadium eventually.

Fort Regent has served the sports community for nearly 50 years but I believe the time has come to cut those ties and allow it to be used for other purposes. That could be a new hotel, conference centre or an entertainment venue. As an example, Gibraltar’s 10 pin-bowling venue is situated in an old fort similar to Fort Regent which could also be used as an alternative site for a cinema. There is much to consider, but it is a tremendous opportunity to get our act together and make a decision.

I started by asking if there was a future for sports facilities in Jersey. The answer is – there has to be.
