A vibrant economy. Our apprentices achieve 90% pass rates and 95% of our students go on to good jobs and further study within one month of graduating.

My mission is for Highlands to be able to grow on the job training so we can retrain employees, relaunch their careers, and enable employers to keep staff who would otherwise not have the skills to support their businesses.

Reduce inequality. We do this by offering a wide range of full and part-time courses to students from the age of 14 to 80 – we embrace diversity and make it work to drive up creativity and productivity.

What is my future perfect you might ask? It is a place where vocational and academic divisions from the times of Aristotle and Plato have been removed. A-Levels are not the only route to success, and we have 1000s of successful alumni to prove it!

Let us refresh education, open doors, and make learning about discovering potential, not stamping it out.

I want to see my students studying in a new campus with satellite centres in town offering services to islanders. My vision is a campus which is not huge in physical dimensions, but great in impact because it is a community centre, used by islanders and businesses to support their endeavours.

Furthermore, I want to see further growth in higher education on-island, partnering with the best internationally, and operating flexible routes of study, full and part-time. We can attract the best in their field and online learning provides plenty of opportunity to do so. We already have interest from European universities and we collaborate with other HE providers on-island to offer courses.

Finally, I am determined to see my students valued for the contribution they make, for them to be confident and resilient; ready to embrace challenge and change for a better Jersey.

University College Jersey – in focus Now that I have outlined my ambitions for Highlands College, I think it appropriate to also take stock of how far we have come.

Since its inception in 1970, Highlands College has become synonymous with sixth form education, apprenticeships, leisure learning and professional studies, and we are of course, home to the original, and at one point only, professional studies centre on the island.

University College Jersey, although far from Beyond 20/20 - Features

being newly established, is one of the most recent developments at Highlands and is the college’s Higher Education Department. The UCJ team has been delivering degree level education to Jersey students for over 25 years, and the department has grown to accommodate more than 200 full and part time students from all ages and walks of life.

We are seeing growth in demand for our HE courses year on year: applications for 2020 enrolments were up by over 10% compared to 2019. I truly believe this is down to a greater awareness of the opportunities that are on our doorstep thanks to the quality and breadth of the UCJ provision. UCJ delivers degrees and higher qualifications in partnership with UK universities, such as University of Plymouth, London South Bank University, and the University of Sussex. That means that all our HE courses are internationally recognised.

Our results also far outstrip the National Average. A total of 95% of all students completing a programme of study at UCJ in 2020 passed their course, with overall grades far above national benchmarks. On bachelor’s degree programmes, 86% of students achieved a first or upper-second class degree, which compares with roughly 70% of students nationally. And 73% of foundation degree (Level 5) students achieved a merit or distinction.

UCJ also delivers HNCs in Construction and Civil Engineering to part-time students in employment. These programmes both had a 100% pass rate with all of the Civil Engineering cohort achieving a distinction and progressing on to a new bachelor’s degree top-up programme at UCJ.

Additionally, the college delivers an Access to Higher Education programme which supports adult learners to get back into education with a view to entering university courses, on and off-island. This year, achievement on the Access course also beat the national benchmark by 17% and most students are now at their desired destination for higher education.

We are already achieving great things at Highlands College, but there is still much untapped potential that can be realised over the next few years through the college’s strategic plan.
