– turning crisis into opportunity

Jersey is undeniably in the grip of a housing crisis. For many young Jersey couples, the traditional dream of
purchasing their own home has become little more than a fantasy, as escalating house prices and a lack of first-time buyer properties have turned their dreams to dust.

Ministers and States Members have, for years, said that we need to provide many more affordable properties, without making the necessary inroads into the problem. Yet the answer, which they have largely overlooked, has been staring them in the face.

Under the scheme, first time buyers are able to acquire their first property at circa 75% of market value and without the need to put down a hefty deposit, which is one of the main stumbling blocks for potential buyers. The scheme, however, currently only operates on sites in Andium ownership; in order to provide this opportunity to more Islanders, the Housing and Environment
Ministers must work together to ensure it is, without further delay, extended to many more sites in both States and private sector
ownership. Now is the time for action rather than words. This is both urgent and very
important, and the new Island Plan will be critical to successful delivery.
