excitement. But the greatest requirement is praise, praise and praise. One immediately notices the difference in a child when praised for good behaviour or a job well done; so it is with puppies. Just the sound of the walker’s soft calm word of praise is sufficient for good behaviour and response to a command and a firm rebuke works where things have not gone so well.

We are all familiar with the yellow harness but perhaps not with the blue. If you see someone in Jersey walking a dog with a blue harness it is a puppy in training. Do not distract the walker or the dog, as one should never, but never, distract a working Guide Dog. There is, of course, much more for the puppy walker to do in the year from when you welcome the beautiful little puppy at six weeks to the time it has to leave. Parting is difficult for both puppy and walker, but whilst the puppy may not be so aware, most certainly the walker is fully aware of the wonderful work that has been done to bring companionship and mobility to a fellow human being.

But back to the Jersey Branch for a moment. Since its inception in 1937 it has, with the generous support of the Jersey public, raised funds for the training of Guide Dogs and their maintenance which includes the cost of all the equipment, food and veterinary bills throughout the Guide Dogs working life. I have served on the local committee for over 60 years and as its chairman for over 50 of those years, I am still in awe of these wonderful dogs to which we look for assistance for the blind and visually disabled. In more recent times, these funds

have been boosted in the past 25 years by the popular book sales which since their introduction in 1994 have raised £464,000 for the branch. Due to Covid-19, no book sales have been able to take place this year and legacies have played a major part in

being able to continue the work. The cost of a Guide Dog from birth to retirement is just short of £50,000, so the Jersey Committee is very grateful that its work is so well supported by our friends, colleagues and the public of Jersey.
