LIFE OF A DAY IN THE GARY WHIPP CEO, NEWTEL (TELECOMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST)

I start the day by asking Alexa to check my diary to see how the land lies for the day. This gives me at least an extra five minutes relaxation. I have other business ventures outside of telecoms which means I can sometimes be working late into the night due to the time differences between myself and my business partners around the world so the morning is normally the quieter part of my day.

Once I have charted my day, I will make the most of the time I do have to have a cup of tea and catch up with my wife or one of my three children. Being with them or hearing from them is a great start to my day. It is then straight into the tub for a long soak before tackling the day ahead.

I have not been into the office for the past five months due to the threat of COVID-19, so I have been running things from my home office. This had its challenges, but we have all adapted and now depending on what I have got planned for the day I will either look to set up for the day at home or head to the office.

I spend most of my days in meetings, so my first priority is to check my e-mails and catch up with my team. It is important to me that I keep in touch with them and clients. As a CEO you are not able to do it all yourself but need to keep your finger on the pulse to deal with all that comes up throughout the day. I am fortunate enough to have a great team of people around me who help keep things running smoothly. I am also fortunate to be in a position where I can pay forward in some way. I regularly select a charity to help raise funds for and spend some of my time working with others to organise fundraising events. Most recently I held a Las Vegas night where all the proceeds went to Durrell and enabled them to purchase a much needed x-ray machine.

I enjoy the unpredictability of my job and whilst it can sometimes be challenging, I love that no two days are ever the same. Some days I can be dealing with the threat of a global outage potentially cutting off services for islanders, other days I will be working with the regulator, the government and other telecoms service providers to develop plans for the future of our island's telecoms service.

Depending on how my day has gone, home time is anytime between 16.00p.m. and 19.00p.m. My other business interests take up most of my evening, but I will always make time to catch up with my family over dinner or take
