LIFE OF A DAY IN THE
DR. JOSE ANTONIO DE CORDOVA ENT/ FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEON CONSULTANT
What can I say? I am always running, back and forward from the hospital to my private clinic In the Lido Medical Centre. It is like having two jobs. Every day is a new challenge, some easier than others. Either a busy day in clinic, in surgery or at home, I rather take one day at the time.
Clinics always have the surprise factor, you never know what is going to come through the door. Every single patient is an individual with different fears, personalities, manners and idiosyncrasies. The first challenge starts as soon as the patient comes into my clinic as I need to identify all these factors quick enough so I can choose the right approach in order to establish empathy and most importantly generate confidence. I call it “the roller- coaster” session as you can easily go from hay fever to a deadly condition every ten minutes. Listening is perhaps the most important quality in my profession as this is the key to make an accurate diagnosis, but most importantly is to get to know your patient. Some patients have more severe and difficult issues than others; perhaps the “Big C” is the most important of all of them. Patients don’t only look for a good doctor but a human one, who can show sympathy, compassion and professionalism. I really wish sometimes to have more time to listen and talk to my patients but unfortunately this is a luxury we don’t have in modern times, especially in the public sector where you have to see as many patients as possible to avoid long waiting lists. This is maybe one of the reasons why some of us enjoy our private practice and private clinics more, as we are more autonomous and more free to choose how many patients we see and how much time
