Reuse is near the top of the waste hierarchy, second only to prevention of waste. It is often used in the same breath as recycling but it is much more than that. In Jersey, thanks to Acorn Enterprises, reuse has an environmental, social and socioeconomic value.


Lockdown. As a virus spread and people the world over were forced to change their habits, the skies cleared over New Delhi, planes parked neatly on the ground, the canal waters cleared in Venice and wild goats ventured into the streets of Llandudno.


Many people have been considering the environment for a long time but, it seemed, the coronavirus pandemic brought it home more than ever before. What are we doing to our planet?

aware of what they are throwing in the bin or taking to the household recycling centre at La Collette. But does every one of us stop and think what can be reused by someone else before dumping it?


There are many reasons to reuse, especially in today’s climate where resources are limited and demand for household and electrical items has increased. Reducing waste through reuse not only prevents essential items from going to landfill or the incinerator, but also provides low income families with household goods at affordable prices.


To reuse an item is to use it again or more than once either in its original form or after washing or minor repairs, for the same or an alternative purpose. To Acorn Enterprises, the activity of reuse creates employment, training and volunteering opportunities for people who have a disability or long-term
