Gillespies, commented: “Following a comprehensive selection process, the urban design and landscape team at Gillespies are thrilled to have been chosen to partner with JDC in the delivery of a bold vision for the future of St Helier’s Waterfront. Working collaboratively with JDC, the community and our experts HETA Architects, ICENI, Waterman Group and WSP, our landscape led proposals plan to sensitively transform the existing waterfront into a mixed-use quarter set within a green framework of beautiful new squares, courtyards, roof terraces, green corridors and parks. The transformation of this historic site will help meet the island’s future needs, creating a vibrant and sustainable new destination for St Helier. We particularly look forward to continuing to work with the communities of St Helier in the coming months, to help shape these exciting proposals.”

An extensive consultation process with the public commenced in mid- October 2020. The consultation is being led by Iceni Projects who have a strong track record of undertaking meaningful dialogue with local communities. They recently supported The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea with a new opportunity area including 3,500 new homes. They also advised and shaped the brief for The Centre for Music in London

and undertaken engagement activities in relation to Illuminated River, which once completed will be the longest public art commission in the world.

The aim of the consultation process in Southwest St Helier is to:

• Raise awareness of the project and framework development;

• Gather aspirations and understand key issues with regard to the St Helier Waterfront;

• Be inclusive, accessible, transparent and engaging; and

• Clearly communicate the feedback from the community to JDC and the design team.

Philippa Curran, Director of Engagement at Iceni Projects said: ‘’We are absolutely delighted to be working as part of the Gillespies team on this important project. We are reviewing the feedback received so far and looking forward to hearing from more of

the community in the new year, with the end goal of creating a sense of ownership and pride in St Helier’s Waterfront which can only happen with a melting pot of ideas from as many people as possible.’’

The first stage of consultation focussed on presenting a concept plan, its principles and the emerging proposals for feedback. As well as people responding via the website, which has been visited over 3,000 times with 247 online questionnaires completed, a programme of stakeholder workshops took place which generated a valuable set of feedback.

The input from the community will help inform the development of more detailed plans for Southwest St Helier Waterfront during the year.

The design team is actively taking on board all of the feedback received, which includes a number of emerging themes:
