Mack Rides revolutionary new coaster breaks records at Silver Dollar City, Missouri

Time Traveler C

oaster lovers are always seeking the newest, best, most exciting ride elements. This appeal is global, and since mid-March has seen them headed for

Branson, Missouri, the entertainment town that is home to Silver Dollar City. This 1880s style, internationally- awarded theme park, established by the Herschend family in 1960, introduced Time Traveler, the world’s fastest, steepest, and tallest complete-circuit spinning roller coaster. Paul Ruben reports Time Traveler marks a new era in coasters, delivering ride

experiences unlike any before, with no two rides alike. A major difference is the spin, which is not a teacup-ride fast spin but a 360º controlled spin that delivers high dimension, sensations and perspectives that differ with every car, every ride, every time. For concept, design and development, Silver Dollar City chose Mack Rides, founded in 1780 and family- owned for eight generations.

Let’s do launch

This custom-designed, custom-engineered ride that introduces a new generation of thrill coasters for families was more than two years in planning and construction. It is Silver Dollar City’s biggest attraction ever with an investment of $26 million. Time Traveler is a one-of-a-kind ride that combines a variety of coaster elements with mountainous terrain. The track will cross over itself 14 times. It will be the fastest, with a top speed of 50.3 mph (81 kph). A 10-story, 90° vertical drop…straight down makes it the steepest, with a custom- engineered immediately out-of-the-station, gravity-driven drop down an Ozarks mountainside. Its tallest point of 100 feet (30 m) makes it the tallest. It is the first and only spinning coaster with three inversions including a dive loop, a vertical loop and a zero-g roll. It will be the first and only with a

vertical loop, and a 95-foot (29 m) tall loop at that. The only other spinning coaster with an inversion is Gekion Live at Japan’s Tokyo Joyopolis. Built in 2012 by Gerstlauer, this launched indoor coaster includes a single corkscrew element. Fans of the super acceleration of launch rides get two launches on Time Traveler – 0 to 47 mph (76 kph) in 3 seconds; 30 to 45 mph (49 to 72 kph) in 3.5 seconds. Plus, the highly-themed cars create the experience of an actual Time Machine. “This coaster’s state-of-the-art controlled spin provides riders a unique thrill experience while still appealing to families,” said Brad Thomas, president of Silver Dollar City Attractions, the initial advocate for delivering a ride like no other. Thomas says Silver Dollar City partnered with Mack because of their long-standing reputation of delivering many of the best and most innovative rides in the entire industry.
